WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- For the second straight game it came down to the final seconds and this time it was senior
Tyrell Sturdivant that put the Stony Brook men's basketball team in the win column, draining a late three for the 63-61 win at Hartford Saturday night. Sturdivant was one of four Seawolves to score in double figures as Stony Brook moves to 7-9 on the year, 2-0 in league play. Hartford now sits at 8-8 on the season, 1-1 in the America East.
Boals' Reaction
"All year long we have been in a lot of close games," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "Our motto has been 'bend, don't break'. We know that things aren't always going to go as you plan, and we had that eight-minute drought, but when we switched up our defense it really helped us. We got some big rebounds in the end and UC [Iroegbu] made a great read on the last play, Tyrell [Sturdivant] was wide open and knocked it down."
Highlights
- The Seawolves used a 9-0 run courtesy of three straight threes, one from senior
UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) and two from sophomore
Michael Almonacy (Brentwood, N.Y.) to get things going in the first half.
- The two teams traded points for much of the remainder of the opening period, as Stony Brook was able to take a 38-35 lead into the break.
- Senior
Junior Saintel (Mays Landing, N.J.) gave the Seawolves a spark to start the second half, scoring six points in the opening minutes, including two dunks, but he picked up his third foul before the first media timeout which shifted the momentum.
- The Hawks put together a 12-0 run following the break in action to regain their lead from early in the game, going up eight with 8:47 left to play.
- Stony Brook did not back down and was able to get back within two after back-to-back threes from senior
Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) and Iroegbu.
- Iroegbu tied it with a pair of free throws with 2:09 on the clock, but Hartford responded to keep the lead in its favor.
- Yeboah laid one in with 51 seconds remaining to put Stony Brook on top. The Hawks took back the advantage, going up one with 12 seconds to play, but it was senior Tyrell Strudivant (Chester, Pa.) that would decide it as he knocked down a three with five seconds left.
