Seawolves Top Binghamton, Remain Undefeated in America East Play

VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's soccer team stayed undefeated in conference play with a 2-1 win over Binghamton on Saturday night from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

With the win, the Seawolves move to 6-3-2 (3-0-0 AE) on the season. Binghamton falls to 3-7-2 (2-1-0 AE).

Quoting head coach Ryan Anatol
"Good overall performance tonight against a difficult opponent. We knew it was going to be a physical game and I thought we defended well and showed real toughness," said Anatol.

"We moved the ball and created some good opportunities and deserved to take the lead. I thought we lost a little composure after we went up but after the equalizer the guys responded well and regained control of the game again and found a way to get the winner."

Highlights

  • Binghamton's Noah Luescher took the first shot of the night early on but missed high. The Seawolves didn't get their first shot off until the 29th minute when senior Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) missed high.
  • Junior Mark Irvine (Southampton, England) followed with a shot on goal just a few minutes later but was stopped by Binghamton keeper Chris Shutler.
  • The two teams combined for only three shots in the first half.
  • In the 54th minute, Irvine crossed the ball to freshman Trausti Birgisson (Kopavogur, Iceland) who converted on a header to give the Seawolves the lead. It was Birgisson's first collegiate goal.
