Seawolves Fall to Penn State

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's soccer team (6-4-2, 3-0-0 AE) dropped its first match in nearly a month, falling to Penn State, 3-0 from Jeffrey Field.

It was the Seawolves' first defeat since they lost to Hofstra on Sept. 12.

Quoting head coach Ryan Anatol
"We did not perform well enough tonight. We made some early mistakes and credit to Penn State, they were able to take advantage of their opportunities. But our guys stuck with it and had some really good moments," said Anatol. "We were a little unfortunate on two occasions to be denied by the woodwork. Sometimes you need a little luck to get back into games like this and it went against us tonight.

But ultimately we need to be better especially defensively. We can't give up three goals and expect to win games. We will move on and be ready for Saturday."

Highlights
  • Penn State got on the board quickly when Daniel Gonzalez got one past freshman goalkeeper Christian Miesch (Brig, Switzerland) for his first goal of the season.
  • After Miesch stopped a few shots in the following minutes, Penn State's Mac Curran doubled the Nittany Lions' lead in the 27th minute on a shot off the dribble.
  • Just moments later, redshirt sophomore Gabriel Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) nearly cut the lead in half but missed off the crossbar.
  • Early in the second half, Gonzalez scored his second goal of the game when he put away a rebound to extend Penn State's lead to three.
  • Freshman Cameron Bonfils (Brookyln, N.Y.) took the next two shots of the night but was unable to get anything past Penn State keeper Arie Ammann.
  • Junior Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) missed off the post in the 73rd minute.
  • Penn State outshot the Seawolves, 14-10.
