ALBANY, N.Y. – In an ending that Hollywood would not ever have been able to dream up, the Stony Brook football team lost in heartbreaking fashion to UAlbany, 25-23, in the fourth annual "Battle for the Golden Apple" on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale at Casey Stadium.
The Seawolves (7-4, 5-3 CAA Football) scored a go-ahead touchdown with 0:17 left in the fourth quarter when senior QB
Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) found senior WR
Julius Wingate (Englewood, N.J.) in the end zone from 41-yards away on a 4-and-10 play. That play gave Stony Brook a 23-22 lead.
The Great Danes (3-8, 1-7 CAA Football) were then able to attempt a 48-yard field goal with 0:04 left on the clock. The kick bounced off the cross bar and over as time expired to give UAlbany the victory.
SCORING
- UAlbany struck first when K Ethan Stark connected on a 43-yard field goal with 9:13 left in the first quarter. The drive was seven plays for 18 yards and took 4:11 off the clock.
- Stony Brook tied it up when K Alex Lucansky hit a 29-yard field goal with 7:21 left in the first quarter. The drive was five plays for 42 yards and took 1:48 off the clock.
- The Great Danes got into the end zone with 1:33 left in the opening quarter when QB Jeff Undercuffler hit WR Juwan Green from 49 yards out for the score. The PAT by K Ethan Stark was good. The drive was two plays for 60 yards and lasted 0:44.
- RB Jordan Gowins got the Seawolves into the end zone with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter with a seven-yard rushing touchdown. The PAT by K Alex Lucansky was good. The drive was six plays for 61 yards and took 2:39 off the clock.
- The Seawolves took the lead for the first time in the game when QB Joe Carbone sprinted 17 yards into the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT by K Alex Lucansky was good. The drive was nine plays for 29 yards and took 4:24 off the clock. The drive began with DB Augie Contressa's 47-yard interception return.
- UAlbany got the fourth quarter scoring started when WR Donavan McDonald pulled in an 81-yard pass from QB Jeff Undercuffler with 5:32 left in the quarter. The PAT was no good to make it a 17-16 Seawolves' lead. The drive was one play for 81 yards and lasted 11 seconds.
- The Great Danes retook the lead when RB Karl Mofor scored on a 16-yard run. The two-point conversion failed. The drive was five plays for 63 yards and took 2:06 off the clock.
- With 17 seconds on the clock and a fourth-and-10 play, QB Joe Carbone found WR Julius Wingate in the end zone from 41 yards away to give Stony Brook the lead. The two-point conversion failed. The Drive was eight plays for 74 yards and took 0:55.
- UAlbany won the game with a 48-yard field goal by K Ethan Stark that hit off the crossbar and bounced through as time expired. The drive was two plays for 11 yards and took 0:13.
