STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Off to its best start in six seasons, the Stony Brook men's basketball team hits the road once again as they head across the Long Island Sound to Kingston, R.I. for a date with the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Both redshirt sophomore forward
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) and redshirt junior forward
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) posted 20-point, 10-rebound nights as the Seawolves pulled away for a 36-point win over Molloy in the 2018-19 home opener. Garcia's numbers resulted in his first career double-double, while Yeboah registered his third 20-point night in his last four appearances.
THE OPPONENT
The Rams hit a three in the closing seconds to grab a home win away from Harvard, 76-74, at the Ryan Center last Friday and have not played since then. They currently own a 2-1 record on the year, with the loss coming by 11 to the College of Charleston.
Coming off a 26-win a season ago and a berth in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, the Rams are under new direction, with former associate head coach David Cox taking the reins as the 20th coach in program history.
Jeff Dowtin leads Rhode Island, scoring 21.3 points per game entering Saturday's matchup. That is good for second in the Atlantic 10. Fatts Russell, the hero against the Crimson with the late three, enters with a 15.7 points per game average and Cyril Langevine is averaging 13 points and 9 rebounds in three starts this season.
THE SERIES
The Rams have won each of the two meetings between the two schools, which both occurred at the Ryan Center during the 2009-10 seasons and 2004-05 seasons. Rhode Island took the most recent matchup 75-58. In the latter of the two matchups, a Stony Brook three that would have tied the game fell short with 32 seconds left en route to a 62-56 Rhode Island victory.
DREAM DAY FOR DREW
Garcia had a career night at Island Federal Arena on Wednesday, recording his first-career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was the second Seawolf to record a 20 and 10 night in the first five games of the 2018-19 season and set new career marks in each category.
KWAS = CONSISTENT
Yeboah has been a constant presence in the Seawolves attack during the first five games of the 2018-19 campaign. He has recorded 20-point outings in three of the first five games, including back-to-back such efforts against Norfolk State and Molloy. He has also chipped in double-figure rebounds in the same three games, with an 11-rebound night in Columbia, S.C., helping the Seawolves to their first win over a Southeastern Conference opponent in the Gamecocks.
RED-HOT START
Stony Brook is off to its best start in six seasons, winning four of its first five games en route to a 4-1 record. The Seawolves last won three of their first four games during the 2012-13 season, when the team won 24 games en route to an America East Regular Season Championship and a second-round finish in the National Invitation Tournament.
PULLING RANK
Yeboah enters Tuesday as the league's leading rebounder, hauling in 8.5 boards per game. He is also second in the league in free throw percentage (.900) and 3-point field goals per game (3.0) and third in overall scoring (18.8).
THEY'RE FREE
Stony Brook is one of the best teams in the conference when it comes to converting at the free-throw line, sitting second in the America East at .759. The Seawolves also boast two of the league's top seven free throw shooters, with Akwasi Yeboah (.893) sitting in second and Elijah Olaniyi (.769) slated seventh, entering this weekend.
UP NEXT
The back end of two straight road games comes on Tuesday night when the Seawolves head to Norfolk, Va. to play the Spartans of Norfolk State. Stony Brook defeated them on November 17 by a final of 72-65 in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
