Stony Brook Holds on to Top Maine on the Road

BANGOR, Maine -- The Stony Brook men's basketball team held on to top Maine, 64-61, at Cross Insurance Arena Sunday afternoon. Akwasi Yeboah made the go-ahead layup with under a minute to play to position the Seawolves for victory. Stony Brook moves to 10-16 on the year, 5-7 in league play, while Maine sits at 6-21 overall, 3-9 in the America East.

Boals Reaction
"Coming into this game we knew we had to be the most energetic team and we had to play the hardest," said head coach Jeff Boals. "Maine had a five-minute stretch where they out-hustled us and out-competed us, and we can't win like that. Our guys responded and made a run, and we found a way at the end to get it done."

Highlights
- Freshman Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) sparked the Seawolves wil back-to-back threes nearing the 12-minute mark in the first half. Junior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) made it eight straight points for Stony Brook, putting the team up double figures for the first time in the game.
- The Seawolves kept their distance for much of the first half, but Maine scored the final five points of the period to make it a one-point game at the break.
- The Black Bears took their first lead of the day early in the second half and eventually used an 11-1 run to pull away.
- Stony Brook responded with a scoring spree of its own, going on a 12-1 run to regain the lead.
- Neither team led by more than four the rest of the way as the two teams traded buckets down the stretch.
- Senior UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) for the Seawolves back within one with 1:42 on the clock and redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) had the go-ahead layup to put Sont Brook up one with 44 seconds remaining.
- A pair of free throws from senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) made it a four-point game with three seconds remaining to help seal the victory.

Notes
- Iroegbu led the way with 13 points, marking the fourth straight game he has scored in double figures.
- Senior Junior Saintel (Mays Landing, N.J.) had impressive showing on the defensive end, finishing with a career-high five blocks.
- This is the 12th time the Seawolves have had a game be decided in the final minute of play this season. Stony Brook is now 5-7 in this situation.
