STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team was able to get back on track in a big way, knocking off UMass Lowell 81-68 at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Thursday night. The Seawolves move to 9-16 on the year, 4-7 in league play, while UMass Lowell now sits at 9-14 overall, 3-7 in the America East.
Boals' Reaction
"It feels great to have that winning feeling again. I think we were due for it, we worked really hard," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "We talked through the losing streak about adversity and working harder, confidence and attitude. Every day [the team] has come to work, their attitudes have been good. I thought today, our defensive intensity was really good and I thought that won the game for us."
Highlights
- Stony Brook used a steady push following the first media timeout of the game to quickly go up double figures on the River Hawks.
- UMass Lowell got back within a possession and the two teams traded buckets until senior Jakub Petras (Rajec, Slovakia) sparked the Seawolves with three straight buckets to put them back up 11.
- A late three from senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) and a half-court buzzer beater by senior UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) made it a 16-point Stony Brook lead at the break.
- The Seawolves kept the momentum going in the second half, quickly upping the difference to 20 points.
- UMass Lowell briefly cut the deficit to single digits with 4:18 left to play, but the Seawolves responded with an 8-2 run and held on for the double-figure victory.
