Stony Brook Defeats St. John's at Home

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's lacrosse edged out St. John's as it earned an 8-6 win at LaValle Stadium Tuesday night. The game was close throughout but three unanswered second-half goals helped secure the victory. The Seawolves move to 4-6 on the year, while St. John's now sits at 6-4.

Nagle's Reaction
"We are a young team and challenged ourselves with our schedule early on," said head coach Jim Nagle. "I've had confidence in our ability to grow and get better through those times early in the year. We knew that we would be faced with adversity to begin the season and now we are just continuing to grow each week."

Highlights
  • Stony Brook struck first as freshman Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario) buried a pass from junior Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) in the opening minutes of the game.
  • Senior Kyle Abdellatif (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) regained the Stony Brook lead after St. John's got on the board midway through the quarter.  Abdellatif picked up the ground ball off a Red Storm turnover and took it the length of the field for his second goal of the season.
  • St. John's evened things up before the start of the second quarter, but Stony Brook was able to put away the lone additional goal before the half as sophomore Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) found his classmate Chris Pickel, Jr., (Bayport, N.Y.) to make it 3-2 at the break.
  • The Seawolves added a pair of goals in the third quarter to make it a two-goal lead, but St. John's responded with back-to-back goals of its own to tie things at five-all with 5:34 left in the third quarter.
  • Haun put the advantage back in Stony Brook's favor nearing the one-minute mark in the third period and quickly added his second of the day in the opening minutes of the fourth.
  • The Seawolves maintained the two-goal lead until Pickel, Jr., put away an empty-net goal on a cross-field pass from sophomore Harrison Matsuoka (Calgary, Alberta). St. John's responded after winning the ensuing face-off but was unable to get any closer.

Notes
  • Senior Brandon Maciejewski (Pen Yan, N.Y.) made his first start of the season in cage and finished with 10 stops in his first win of the year.
  • Rees notched a season-high with five ground balls in the game, while senior Tyler Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) grabbed four and won four of his five trips to the face-off X.
