Seawolves Drop Season Opener at George Washington

WASHINGTON -- The Stony Brook men's soccer team opened its 2018 campaign on Friday night at GW Soccer Field, falling to George Washington by the final score of 3-2. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 0-1-0 in 2018.

Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"Tonight was a tale of two halves. The first 45 minutes we dominated play and deserved to lead the game. We were not able to sustain it in the second half, and credit to GW for taking advantage of their opportunities."

Highlights
  • Junior Gabriel Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) opened the scoring with his first career goal in the 23rd minute. Freshman Trausti Birgisson (Kopavogur, Iceland) picked up the assist on the goal, making it 1-0 Stony Brook.
  • The Seawolves shut out George Washington in the first half of action, as freshman Christian Miesch (Brig, Switzerland) tallied three saves in the first 45 minutes.
  • George Washington's Oscar Haynes Brown buried the equalizer in the 56th minute. He then added two more goals in the second half, putting the Colonials up 3-1.
  • Stony Brook was able to score late when senior Martieon Watson (Vessigny, Trinidad) found junior Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) for a goal in the 87th minute.
  • Total shots were even, 12-12.
