Stony Brook Holds On to Top Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Stony Book women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall in its fourth straight road game, earning a 1-0 victory over the Pirates Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves move to 2-2-0 on the season, while Seton Hall now sits at 1-2-1.

Faherty's Reaction
"Today was a tough game for our group, and credit to Seton Hall for making it such a difficult match," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "Thankfully we had a few bright moments in the second half and were able to score a good team goal with quite a few players involved in the build-up."

Any time you win a ame, it's a good feeling, but there are quite a few areas we need to get better in. We will continue to work hard on the training field in order to perform better on gameday."

Highlights
- Sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) made a pair of crucial saves in the early-goings. She recovered on a bobbled stop after jumping to save the far-out attempt, before coming out of the goal to cut down the angle and blocking a shot in the 15th minute.
- Sophomore Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) gave the Seawolves their best look of the first half when she sent a header to a wide-open left side of the goal, but the redirect went just wide of the post and the score remained 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.
- In the 60th minute Manner continued to bring the aggressive play and was again drawn out of the goal. A near collision between the keeper and a Seton Hall forward caused the ball to slip away from both players and roll toward the goal. Manner was the first to the loose ball, tracking it down before it reached the goal line.
- Freshman Mari Brenden (Oslo, Norway) put Stony Brook on the board in the 76th minute after sophomore Michaela Goglia (Bristol, R.I.) went 1-on-1 with the Pirates' keeper and slipped the ball to Brenden, with her on the left side, who knocked it in on the wide-open look. The Seawolves' defense held strong for the remaining 14 minutes for the win.
