HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team was unable to get by Hofstra Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Seawolves now sit at 4-5-0 on the year, while the Pride move to 6-3-0.Â
Faherty's Reaction
"It's a tough loss for our team and program, as it was a spirited match for 90 minutes with limited quality chances for either side," said head coach
Brendan Faherty. "We knew that Hofstra was dangerous on corner kicks and unfortunately we gave up one too many on the day.
"After opening up with eight of nine on the road, we are looking forward to playing two at home next weekend in front of our supporters."Â
Highlights
- It was a tight battle in the first 45 minutes with both teams taking just two shots on goal. Sophomores
Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) tried to get things going for the Seawolves in the first half, but both opportunities were denied.Â
- Hofstra was granted a free kick 19-yards out on the left wing in the 48th minute, but the Stony Brook defense held strong and was able to clear out the attempt.Â
- In the 71st minute the Pride put away the game's only goal, heading in a corner kick for the lead.
- Sophomore
Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.) nearly tied it with back-to-back shots in the 78th minute, getting ahold of her own rebound off the bottom of the left post, but she was unable to get it over the goal line.Â
