STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team put on a dominating performance as it breezed by Vermont, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Six different Seawolves earned points in the team's third 4-0 win of the season. Stony Brook moves to 7-5-1, 2-0-1 in America East action, while Vermont now sits at 3-6-3, 1-1-1 in league play.Â
Faherty's Reaction
"I'm really happy for our group, we came out and scored a goal quick, and that really changes the game when you get that early lead," said head coach
Brendan Faherty. "We added two goals late in the first half and were up 3-0 at halftime, I think our group felt really good, especially after having to come back in our last two games. It was great to get a shutout, we haven't done that in a while, and to score four goals. We got to see a lot of different players play and, again, I believe that one of the strengths of our team is our depth."Â
Highlights
- The Seawolves set the tone early as sophomore
Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) brought the ball down the left side of the field and found classmate
Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in the middle, who redirected the pass into the net in the opening minute of the game.Â
- Sophomore
Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) made it a 2-0 lead for Stony Brook in the 32nd minute when she sent a free kick from 21 yards out into the top left corner of the goal.
- Freshman
Mari Brenden (Oslo, Norway) extended the lead with her second goal of the year in the 35th minute. Junior
Marissa Kelberman (Bolton, Mass.) sent the ball down the left sideline to sophomore
Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.) who served it into the middle to Brenden for the score.Â
- The Seawolves took a 3-0 lead and a 10-2 shooting advantage into the break.Â
- Vermont created more opportunities for itself in the second half, tripling its shot total from the first, but the Stony Brook defense was able to keep the Catamounts away from the goal.Â
- Sophomore
Chelsie DePonte put away her second goal of the week when she fired in a rebound to make it 4-0. Freshman
Arianna Barbieri (East Setauket, N.Y.) took the initial shot but was denied by the Vermont keeper and the deflection went right to DePonte.Â
