STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's soccer team picked up a victory on Wednesday night, topping St. Joseph's at LaValle Stadium, 2-1.
Senior
Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) scored two unanswered goals to lead the Seawolves, who now sit at 2-2-0 on the season.
Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"I thought we dominated large parts of the game. We gave up an early goal, and we had to fight back and that's a challenge. The guys showed character to come back from a goal down, it wasn't easy. At times I thought we played really well and I thought at times we could have done better with the ball," said Anatol. "I felt like we deserved the result. We knew they weren't going to give it to us. Overall, I'm happy to get the win and we want to continue getting better."
Highlights
- Graduate student Arni Jakobsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) took the first shot of the night in the first minute but missed wide.
- The Hawks opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Leon Maric found the bottom left side of the net.
- Both teams exchanged shots over the next 15 minutes of action until Gamwanya drilled the equalizer into the back of the net off a free kick.Â
- Just before halftime, St. Joseph's midfielder Derek MacKinnon tried to give his team the lead but was denied by freshman goalkeeper Christian Miesch (Brig, Switzerland).
- After a relatively quiet first 40 minutes of the second half, junior Mark Irvine (Southampton, England) beat his defender to the end line and found Gamwanya in front of the net for a game-winning header.
- The Seawolves outshot the Hawks, 16-9, in the victory. It was the third straight game that Stony Brook outshot its opponent.
