Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Latimer Block Seals Solo First Place for Stony Brook

ALBANY, N.Y. – After hitting the go-ahead jumper to give the Stony Brook men's basketball team the lead in regulation, freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) made the big play in overtime, blocking a UAlbany shot as time expired to seal the Seawolves' 67-66 victory over the Great Danes on Wednesday night, improving Stony Brook to 5-0 in America East play and putting them in sole possession of first place in the league.

Redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) recorded his fifth double-double of the 2018-19 season, scoring 21 points and hauling in 11 rebounds, while senior Jaron Cornish hit the game-winning three in overtime en route to a 14-point night.

BOALS' REACTION
"This game was a street fight for 45 minutes. It was a battle and our guys were ready for it. Any time you can go on the road and get a win is great. Our guys are battle tested and tonight was another example of their toughness. We played in a great atmosphere as it always is here and we are really happy to come up here and get a win."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Seawolves started hot, scoring eight of the game's first 11 points. Cornish had five of them, accompanied by a sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) three-pointer to go up 8-3 inside of two minutes.
  • Defensively Stony Brook clamped down, forcing the Great Danes to miss seven of eight in a stretch of five minutes, allowing the team to go up 18-11 near the midway point of the period.
  • Albany pulled back within one at the 4:28 mark thanks to five free throws in a minute stretch, cutting the Stony Brook lead down to 22-21.
  • The offenses came together down the stretch of the first half, combining to make eight of the last 13 shots with Stony Brook up 33-30 at the break.
  • After Stony Brook went up 38-34 inside of 90 seconds into the second half, the Great Danes responded with a 12-0 run to feed off the home crowd and extend the lead to eight at 46-38.
  • Six in a row after layups from Olaniyi, redshirt sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) and Yeboah cut the lead down to two but the Seawolves were not able to complete the comeback at that point.
  • Albany's lead got to seven on an Antonio Rizzuto three with 7:28 left in regulation, pushing the advantage to 55-48 before the Seawolves made their charge.
  • The Seawolves tied it with 1:09 to go on a Yeboah three, and after they got a stop, re-gained the lead on Latimer's jumper with 15 seconds left.
  • Ahmad Clark sent the game to overtime, driving baseline and converting a reverse layup with six seconds left to tie the game at 61.
  • Albany went up 66-64 with 3:42 left in the extra session, but were held scoreless the rest of the way as Yeboah and Cornish hit threes in the five-minute period and that is all Stony Brook would need to take home the win.
