STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team recorded its first loss in America East play on Saturday night, falling to Vermont 73-52 at Island Federal Arena in front of a sold out crowd of 4,009 fans.
Redshirt-sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.)led the Seawolves with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, while freshman
Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.)and redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)added 10 each.
BOALS' REACTION
"It was a phenomenal atmosphere tonight. Give Vermont a lot of credit. Hats off to them for making plays. We talked about coming out of the second half with a sense of urgency and we didn't do that. You can't go behind against a really good team. You have to get shots against Vermont and you have to make jump shots. We got a little sloppy in transition and they made plays."
HIGHLIGHTS
- It was an even start to the game, as Vermont found themselves up 7-6 with 14:37 to go. Latimer had four of the Seawolves' six to that point.
- Five straight from Yeboah gave Stony Brook the advantage at 16-13 with 10:29 left, and that ballooned into a 10-0 run that was capped by a Corry Long (Cincinatti, Ohio) three with 8:37 left.
- Vermont answered, scoring 12 unanswered of their own to take a lead they would not relinquish at 25-21 with 5:01 to go in the first half.
- After a Garcia layup ended the consecutive points streak, the Catamounts scored 10 of the period's final 12 points to take a double-digit lead into the break.
- The run continued into the second half, as Vermont scored the first seven and 12 of the first 14 to extend the margin to 19 at 47-28.
- Vermont's lead would diminish as small as 11 with 12:07 left as Latimer hit a left-corner three that brought Island Federal Arena to life, but a quick 8-1 spurt by the visitors slowed the momentum and the Catamounts were able to finish it off from there.
