STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team looks to pull even with first-place Vermont on Wednesday night when they take on the defending conference champions, UMBC, in Baltimore, Md. The Seawolves are coming off the team's first conference loss, dropping a home game to the Catamounts in front of a sold-out Island Federal Arena crowd. Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 14 points off the bench, while redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) and freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) each added 10.

THE OPPONENT
UMBC comes into Wednesday night's contest winners of four consecutive contests, with the most recent coming on Saturday afternoon, defeating New Hampshire 59-51 in Durham, N.H. K.J. Jackson led the Retrievers with 21 points in the game, while Joe Sherburne added 14 points and nine boards as the Retrievers climbed to 5-2 in America East play.

On the season, Sherburne is the team's leading scorer at 14.4 per night. K.J. Jackson (11.4) and Brandon Horvath (10.0) are the other two Retrievers averaging double figures. Sherburne has played the seventh-most minutes in the country this season, going into Wednesday just shy of 800 on the season. K.J Jackson's 50 steals are 15th nationally. The team sits 18th in the country with 177 on the year, a number that leads the league.

THE SERIES
Stony Brook leads the overall series 24-10, winning 19 of the last 21 meetings between the two schools. The teams split last season, with the road team taking each contest. Akwasi Yeboah had 18 while Elijah Olaniyi had 13 in the team's 64-57 win in Baltimore last season.

BENCH BUCKETS
Redshirt-sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Seawolves in scoring on Saturday night, totaling 14 points, with 10 coming in the second half. Coming off the bench in all but two games, he is averaging just under 10 points a game, at a 9.7 per night clip. He is very efficient from the floor as a bench spark as well, shooting 47 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range this season for the Seawolves.

IMPROVING YEAR BY YEAR
The Seawolves are already 9.5 games better than last season, which is 1.5 less than the best turnaround in the country. Stony Brook has won four games more (17) than the 2017-18 season in which they won 13. The best turnaround this season currently belongs to Longwood, who is 11 games better than they were last year. Bryant, Pitt and South Florida currently stand 10 games ahead of their respective 2017-18 paces.

DEFENDING THE LONG GAME
In conference play this season, the Seawolves have been winning the battle from outside the arc, especially on the defensive end. They are holding teams to just 26.6 percent from long range in six America East conference contests. The next-best team defensively from outside is UMass Lowell, who is currently holding teams to 30.6 percent from deep.

COMEBACK KIDS
Down by eight in the second half of Wednesday's game at UAlbany, the Seawolves did what they have done all season: rally back and win the game. They scored 13 of the final 19 points of regulation to send the night into overtime before prevailing. After Stony Brook's 18-point comeback at Maine on  Saturday afternoon, the Seawolves have come from behind three times this season when trailing by 10 or more points in the second half.

CAN'T SPELL "ELITE" WITHOUT "ELI"
Coming off the Christmas break with three such games in his previous eight outings, sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) has scored in double figures in five of his last seven appearances. Over this seven-game stretch, the Newark, N.J. native is averaging 10.7 points per game, along with 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per night.

DROPPING DIMES
Senior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) recorded the team's first 10-assist performance since 2013 on Saturday, dishing out 10 in the team's win against Maine. Nine of these came in the second half while four different Seawolves recorded eight or more points in the period. He is the third player in the America East to accomplish the feat this season and is the only one to do it in conference play during the 2018-19 campaign.

ROAD-FLOOR… ADVANTAGE?
Stony Brook has played 13 of its 21 games away from home during the 2018-19 campaign and won 11 of them. This includes 10 true road wins, which is the most in the country, after the team's victory in Albany on Wednesday. The team's five consecutive wins on the road are tied for the third-most with Liberty and UNC Greensboro.
