GAME NOTES Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After a historic performance in its non-conference season, the Stony Brook men's basketball team will look to carry that into the conference schedule, which begins Saturday afternoon against UMass Lowell in Lowell, Mass.

The Seawolves ended the 2018 calendar year with the team's seventh road win, a 73-63 defeat of Northern Iowa on December 29 to improve to 12-3 on the year. Sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) broke the Seawolves program record for most makes without a miss, hitting all nine of his shots from the field. Freshman Jules Moor (Houston, Texas) added a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds, as well as swiping four steals in the win.

THE OPPONENT
The River Hawks enter the conference slate off a shootout win against Sacred Heart, winning 100-91 in overtime in Fairfield, Conn. on Saturday afternoon. Christian Lutete and Obadiah Noel paced UMass Lowell, combining for 51 points and six 3's in an afternoon that the River Hawks ended regulation on an 8-0 run and scored 26 of the last 34 points of the game.

Lutete and Noel are the team's leading scorers, averaging 17.4 and 16.1 points per game, respectively. Lutete is also grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game. Ryan Jones leads the America East in A/TO ratio at 2.13 and Lutete has recorded five double-doubles, the most in the conference.

THE SERIES
Stony Brook has won 13 of the 18 overall meetings between the schools, including nine of the 10 matchups while both teams are Division I. The Seawolves split last season's series that included a win at Island Federal Arena on February 8. Redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) was one of three scorers with 16 points on the afternoon.

PERFECTION
Sophomore Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) made Stony Brook program history Saturday night, making all nine of his shots en route to a career-high 24 points. That is the most makes without a miss in basketball history, besting Jameel Warney's 8-for-8 outing during the 2012 season. Garcia made eight of his shots in the second half as the Seawolves pulled ahead by double figures, leading to a 10-point win at Northern Iowa to close the non-conference season.

HELP ME, HELP YOU
Senior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) enters conference play inside the Top 4 in two passing categories in the America East. He is currently averaging 3.8 assists per game, good for fourth in the league and is on pace to beat his 77 last season. Abaco's own is also second in the league in assist-turnover ratio at 2.0, behind UMass Lowell's Ryan Jones, who sits at 2.1 entering Saturday afternoon.

CRAZY YOUNGSTERS
Stony Brook's "Experience" according to KenPom is 1.22, or the second-youngest team in the America East and inside the Top 50 for youngest teams in the country. The young players came up big on Saturday night in Iowa, with freshman Jules Moor (Houston, Texas) scoring 14 points, grabbing seven rebounds and recording four steals, while classmate Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) finished the night with 11 points and eight rebounds.

BOARD BULLIES
Entering Thursday's action, the Seawolves ranked sixth in the country in total rebounds with 600 on the season, averaging 40.0 per game. Both numbers lead the conference, as does the team's 6.8 rebounding margin. The team is rebounding 35.3 percent of its own shots, ranking 28th in the country in offensive rebounding percentage, according to KenPom.

ICE IN HIS VEINS
Cold weather does not bother freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.), as he scored in double figures in all eight of his December appearances, including a career-high 22 points against Hofstra. He finished the month averaging 14.1 points per game and taking care of business at the line, making 26 of his 32 attempts at the charity stripe.

BREAKING RECORDS
Stony Brook won its 12th non-conference game on Sunday afternoon and has now set a new D1 record for most non-conference wins in a single season in program history. The Seawolves last won 12 non-conference games in the 1990-91 season when they won the Skyline Conference after going 23-4 and 9-1 in conference play.
