STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Led by a double-double from redshirt junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) and a seven-block performance from sophomore
Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.), the Stony Brook men's basketball team won its second consecutive America East contest, and fourth straight overall, defeating Binghamton 59-46 on Wednesday night in front of 2,647 fans at Island Federal Arena.
Knotted at 31 with 14:26 to play in regulation, Stony Brook ripped off a 15-0 run to pull away for good. Freshman
Jules Moor (Houston, Texas) scored seven of the 15, including a highlight-reel dunk, and redshirt sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in five during the stretch to ensure victory for the Seawolves.
BOALS' REACTION
"I'm really happy with our defensive effort. They really came to play in both halves. We had a little extra alertness with Binghamton's weapons. It was not the prettiest of games from a flow standpoint, but our guys did a fantastic job handling the runs they had and responding to them. Our guys are a resilient bunch. They made a couple of runs, but our guys weren't phased and we were able to chip away and have a good lead at the end."
HIGHLIGHTS
- The game started slow, with neither team scoring until the 17:12 mark, when freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) hit his lone three of the contest to start the scoring.
- Sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) helped the Seawolves build their lead, stealing a JC Show pass and laying it in at the other end to extend the advantage to 15-8 at the 8:41 mark of the half.
- Stony Brook's lead first hit double figures at the end of the period, as the Seawolves ended the first 20 minutes on a 7-0 run that was finished by an Otchere layup with 29 seconds left, making it 27-15 heading into the locker room.
- Binghamton came out of the second half with a better offensive flow, starting on a 16-4 run in the first 5:34 to tie the contest at 31 before Stony Brook pulled away for good.
- Latimer answered the tying basket immediately with a layup on a drive to the basket and that sparked Stony Brook on the 15-0 run that would help them see the game out.
- Binghamton cut the lead as close as 10 in the final minutes, but a pair of Yeboah layups, along with an Olaniyi finish inside, helped the Bearcats stay at bay.
