24th-Ranked Seawolves Force Overtime, but Fall in Battle with No. 2 James Madison

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Redshirt senior kicker Nick Courtney (East Meadow, N.Y./WT Clark) nailed a career-long 47-yard field goal with seconds remaining in regulation to send the 24th-ranked Stony Brook football team into overtime with No. 2 James Madison, but the Seawolves fell short in the top 25 battle against the Dukes, 45-38, on Saturday night in front of a record 12,812 fans at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Homecoming.
 
The Dukes (5-1, 2-0 CAA Football) were able to score a touchdown in the first overtime, while the Seawolves (4-2, 1-1 CAA Football) were unable to enter the end zone during their possession.
 
Redshirt freshman RB Ty Son Lawton (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) highlighted the Stony Brook offense with a career-best 108 yards rushing and three touchdowns, while redshirt junior QB Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) tossed for a career-best 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Redshirt senior WR Nick Anderson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) pulled down seven receptions for 154 yards and a score as well. 
 
 
SCORING
  • James Madison took advantage of an early Stony Brook turnover and scored three plays later when QB Ben DiNucci ran it into the end zone from 20 yards away. The PAT by K Ethan Ratke was good. The drive was three plays for 32 yards and took 1:04 off the clock.
  • The Seawolves answered on the ensuing drive when RB Ty Son Lawton punched it in on a six-yard run with 9:23 remaining in the opening quarter. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was 12 plays for 75 yards and took 4:14 off the clock. A 28-yard pass from QB Tyquell Fields to WR Nick Anderson that put the ball inside the five highlighted the drive.
  • The Dukes answered on their next possession when RB Jawon Hamilton outran everyone into the end zone from 55 yards away. The PAT by K Ethan Ratke was good. The drive was seven plays for 75 yards and took 3:22 off the clock.
  • Stony Brook even the score again when RB Ty Son Lawton dove into the end zone from four yards away with 2:15 left in the first quarter. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was two plays for 45 yards and took just 0:28 off the clock. Again, QB Tyquell Fields found WR Nick Anderson, this time for a 41-yard gain to spark the drive.
  • JMU retook the lead when RB Percy Agyei-Obese scored on a two-yard rush with 13:15 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT by K Ethan Ratke was good. The drive was 10 plays for 75 yards and took 4:00 off the clock.
  • A perfect pass from Stony Brook QB Tyquell Fields to WR Jean Constant in the end zone from 19 yards away with 9:19 remaining in the second quarter pulled the Seawolves within one point and the PAT by K Nick Courtney evened the score at 21-21. The drive was two plays for 18 yards and took 0:41. The drive began when DL Odean Gilzene recovered a JMU fumble. 
  • The Dukes jumped back on top before halftime when QB Ben DiNucci hit WR Brandon Polk with a 12-yard pass in the end zone. The PAT by Ethan Ratke was good. The drive was six plays for 79 yards and took 2:39 off the clock.
  • JMU opened the second half with a 24-yard field goal by K Ethan Ratke. The drive was eight plays for 51 yards and took 3:42 off the clock.
  • Another fourth-down play by Stony Brook QB Tyquell Fields as he found WR Nick Anderson in the back of the end zone on a 4th-and-5 play with a 26-yard pass with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was five plays for 69 yards and took 1:22 off the clock. The drive started when JMU fumbled deep in Stony Brook territory.
  • The Dukes extended their lead back to 10 when RB Percy Agyei-Obese scored on a 24-yard rush on the first play of the fourth quarter. The PAT by K Ethan Ratke was good. The drive was three plays for 31 yards and took 1:21 off the clock.
  • Stony Brook got right back in the game with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter when RB Ty Son Lawton scored his third touchdown of the game on a one-yard rush. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive, which began with a JMU fumble on the Seawolves' three-yard line, was eight plays for 97 yards and took 3:47 off the clock.
  • Stony Brook's K Nick Courtney nailed a career-long 47-yard field goal with 0:05 remaining to tie the score at 38-38. The drive was 11 plays for 51 yards and took 1:39 off the clock.
  • JMU's RB Jawon Hamilton scored on a three-yard run in the first overtime period. The PAT by Ethan Ratke was good.

  • Stony Brook gained 436 yards of total offense on 72 plays. JMU had 547 yards of total offense on 73 plays.

  • Saturday's attendance of 12,812 for Homecoming is the largest crowd for a Stony Brook football game at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
  • Stony Brook played in its 11th overtime in program history.
  • RB Ty Son Lawton scored his third, fourth and fifth rushing touchdowns of the season and his career on Saturday night. It marked the redshirt freshman's first career multi-touchdown game.
  • RB Ty Son Lawton scored three rushing touchdowns on Saturday and marked the first Stony Brook player to accomplish the feat since Stacey Bedell scored four touchdowns against Richmond on Sept. 17, 2016.
  • RB Ty Son Lawton recorded his first 100-plus yard rushing game of his career with 108 Yards on a career-best 27 carries on Saturday. 
  • QB Tyquell Fields tossed his seventh and eighth touchdown passes of the season and his ninth and 10th of his career on Saturday night. The scoring passes went to WR Jean Constant and WR Nick Anderson.  
  • QB Tyquell Fields recorded the third 200-plus yard passing game of the season and his career with a career-best 318 On Saturday.

  • WR Nick Anderson pulled down a career-high 154 yards on seven catches on Saturday night. It marked his first career 100-plus yard game of his career.
  • WR Nick Anderson pulled in his first receiving touchdown of the season and the second of his career.
  • K Nick Courtney made a career-long 47-yard field goal with 0:05 left to force overtime. The made FG was tied for the second longest FG in school history and is the longest since Wesley Skiffington made a 48-yard kick against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 20, 2012.   
  • LB Reidgee Dimanche collected a career-best 12 total tackles on Saturday that included his first career sack. His previous best was nine stops made at Utah State in week 2.
  • DB Augie Contressa equaled his career-high of 11 tackles on Saturday.
  • DB TJ Morrison recorded both a fumble recovery and an interception on Saturday night. The interception was the second of his career.
  • WR Shawn Harris Jr., a true freshman made, his collegiate debut on Saturday night.
  • DB Kareem Gaulden started for the first time in his Stony Brook career.
  • OL Mason Zimmerman extended his consecutive starts streak to 37 games, while DB Gavin Heslop extended his streak to 31 straight games. DB Augie Contressa extended his consecutive start streak to 18 games.
  • James Madison won the toss and deferred to the second half.
  • Captains for Saturday's game were RB Isaiah White, DB Gavin Heslop and DL Sam Kamara.
  • The honorary captain was 2019 Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Miguel Maysonet.
