Hellams Jr. Pulled in First Career Touchdown, but Seawolves Stumble at Richmond

 
RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt sophomore WR Delante Hellams Jr. (Washington D.C./Dematha Catholic) pulled in a 57-yard touchdown pass, the first of his career, but the 20th ranked Stony Brook football team fell to Richmond in CAA Football action at Robins Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
Hellams Jr. finished the game with a pair of receptions for 67 yards and the touchdown for the Seawolves (5-4, 2-3 CAA Football). The Spiders (5-4, 4-1 CAA Football) won for the fourth time in the last five games.   
 
SCORING
  • Stony Brook cracked the scoring column first when K Nick Courtney connected on a 26-yard field goal with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter. The drive was six plays for 41 yards and took 2:15 off the clock. The drive began when DB Synceir Malone intercepted a Richmond pass.  
  • Richmond took the lead when QB Joe Mancuso scampered 10 yards into the end zone for a touchdown with 10:10 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT was no good. The drive was 12 plays for 90 yards and too 5:21 off the clock.
  • The Spiders added to the lead when QB Joe Mancuso found WR Keyston Fuller in the end zone with a 40-yard pass with 5:54 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT by K Jake Larson was good. The drive was four plays for 69 yards and took 1:31 off the clock.
  • On the ensuring drive, Stony Brook got into the end zone when QB Tyquell Fields found WR Delante Hellams Jr. in stride for  57-yard touchdown catch and run with 5:11 left in the second quarter. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was just two plays for 62 yards and took 0:43 off the clock. 
  • Richmond added to their lead when QB Joe Mancuso connected with WR Keyston Fuller on a three-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT by K Jake Larson was good. The drive was seven plays for 71 yards and took 2:44 off the clock.
  • UR opened the second half scoring when QB Joe Mancuso ran it into the end zone from six yards away with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT by K Jake Larson was good. The drive was seven plays for 80 yards and took 3:09 off the clock. 
  • Richmond tacked on a 31-yard field goal by K Jake Larson with 6:40 left in the fourth quarter. The drive was nine plays for 32 yards and took 5:57 off the clock.
THE NUMBERS
  • Stony Brook gained 288 yards of total offense on 62 plays. Richmond had 470 yards of total offense on 71 plays.
  • The Seawolves had the ball for 23:23 minutes of the game.
  • PASSING: Stony Brook: 14-32-1 for 216 yards, one touchdown. Richmond: 23-30-1 for 318 yards, two touchdowns.
  • RUSHING: Stony Brook: 30 carries for 72 yards. Richmond: 41 carries for 152 yards, two touchdowns.
  • QB Tyquell Fields had 206 passing yards with one touchdown.
  • WR Nick Anderson had three catches for 62 yards.  
  • RB Ty Son Lawton collected 35 rushing yards on 16 carries.
  • DB Synceir Malone recorded nine total tackles and had one interception.
NOTES
  • QB Tyquell Fields tossed his 11th touchdown pass of the season and his 13th of his career on Saturday afternoon. The scoring pass went to WR Delante Hellams Jr. 
  • WR Delante Hellams Jr. scored the first touchdown of his career on that pass from QB Tyquell Fields in the second quarter.
  • With Hellams Jr.'s TD catch, eight Seawolves have now scored their first career touchdowns his season. 
  • K Nick Courtney's field goal in the first half was his ninth of the season and 15th of his career. With his ninth of the season he now sits tied for sixth-place on Stony Brook's single season list. His 15th of his career places him in sixth-place on Stony Brook's career list. 
  • DB Synceir Malone collected his second interception of the season and the fourth of his career with a pick in the first quarter.
  • DB Gavin Heslop blocked a Richmond FG attempt in the third quarter. It marked Stony Brook's first blocked FG since doing so against Richmond on Sept. 22, 2018.
  • DL Sean Hammonds Jr. started for the first as a Seawolf on Saturday against Richmond. It marked his 11th career start overall during his collegiate career. He started 10 games at Ball State.
  • OL Mason Zimmerman extended his consecutive starts streak to 39 games, while DB Gavin Heslop extended his streak to 33 straight games. DB Augie Contressa extended his consecutive start streak to 20 games. DL Casey Williams extended his streak to 16, while OL Kyle Nunez and DL Brandon Lopez added to their streak to make it 14 straight starts now.
  • Richmond won the toss and deferred to the second half.
  • Captains for Saturday's game were RB Isaiah White and DB Gavin Heslop.
