STONY BROOK, N.Y. – When redshirt senior RB
Isaiah White (Gordon Heights, N.Y./Longwood) takes the field at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday, he and his fellow 15 members of the senior class, will feel a wide range of emotions.
Saturday's game - the annual Battle of the Golden Apple - against CAA Football rival UAlbany will get underway at 2 p.m. (
GET YOUR TICKETS NOW), and approximately 20 minutes prior to the kickoff, White and the senior class will be honored in a ceremony on the field.
The day and the game will bring vast emotions for White and his classmates.
"I honestly don't know how I will feel," White said. "The fact with everything winding down now, I don't really feel anything. It doesn't feel like my last week of practice. I don't have too many emotions about it now. I know it will hit me sometime."
White has a lot to reminisce about since he began his career back in the fall of 2015. Back then, as a true freshman, White turned a lot of heads by rushing for 103 yards in his collegiate debut against Central Connecticut. He went on to play in six games that season and gained 243 yards on the ground.
Despite his success on the offensive side of the ball, White moved over to defense where he spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as a linebacker and on special teams.
"It was a crazy transition, but I had fun," White remembered. "I learned a lot being behind a lot of great players. I was behind two All-American linebackers in Shayne (Lawless) and Noah (McGinty) and getting better and smarter as a football player. It was just a humbling experience and I got time to sit back and mature as a college player."
Mature he did. After taking a redshirt season in 2018, White returned to the offense and the running back position and was voted as a team captain for the 2019 campaign.
With one final game left this season, White has recorded 680 rushing yards with five touchdowns despite being banged up with some nagging injuries. He is coming off a career-high game at Delaware last week when he tallied 188 yards on 26 carries. It marked his fourth 100-plus yard game this season that included three straight games in September against Wagner, Fordham and Rhode Island.
"My main thing was to make sure I always did what was emphasized and what the coaches ask and get through to us," White said. "The sky was the limit for what was expected from the season. I just wanted to do as much as I could 100 percent of the time. I have one more ride this weekend and I'm ready to go."
White's one more ride comes on Saturday when he and the Seawolves will attempt to bring home the Golden Apple trophy.
"It is a rivalry. This is our biggest rivalry that we have," said White. "It is almost like if we lose every game in a season you make sure you beat Albany. That's what time it is. The boys are focused. Coaches are locked in and the game plan is ready. We are ready to go."
THE SERIES
This will be the 21st meeting between the two in-state SUNY rivals and the fifth edition of the "Battle for the Golden Apple." UAlbany owns a 12-8 series lead, but Stony Brook owns a 6-4 series advantage in games played at LaValle Stadium (Complete series history on page 4).
THE BATTLE FOR THE GOLDEN APPLE
Stony Brook and UAlbany will be playing for the Golden Apple Trophy for the fifth time. The Seawolves claimed the first victory back in 2015 and won it again in 2017. UAlbany was able to keep the trophy in the capital city in 2016 and won it in 2018.
