STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – After making the first to cut the deficit to one, junior
Mouhamadou Gueye (Staten Island, N.Y.) grabbed the offensive rebound off the miss and hit a floater with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Stony Brook men's basketball team a thrilling 87-84 victory over Wagner on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Makale Foreman (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with a season-high 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting to lead the Seawolves offensively, with classmate
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) adding 18.
FORD'S REACTION
"That was one heck of a college basketball game. Both teams played at extremely high levels on offense. It's unfortunate that either team lost because they deserved to win today as well. It is really neat that Mo, who grew up and went to high school on Staten Island, hit the game-winner".
FLOW OF THE GAME
- Olaniyi scored five of the Seawolves' first eight points as they raced out to an 8-0 advantage on the road.
- Wagner answered with eight in a row of their own to tie the game, but the visitors answered with back to back triples to regain the advantage at 14-8.
- Gueye hit a jumper with 7:32 to play in the half to give Stony Brook its biggest lead of the period at 29-21.
- The Seawolves entered the break with a 39-36 advantage.
- Foreman started his second-half scoring with a pull up to give Stony Brook a five-point lead at 52-47.
- After Wagner scored five in a row to tie it, sophomore Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) hit a three to put Stony Brook back ahead.
- The hosts took the lead with 1:06 remaining. The teams traded turnovers and then Foreman hit a floater off glass with 15 seconds left to send the game to the extra session.
- A pair of free throws gave Wagner the lead with 2:01 to go but Foreman hit a three to knot the affair at 80 with 1:48 left.
- Latimer's shot was initially a three but after review, was called back to a two to make it 83-82 Wagner.
- The Seahawks went 1-for-2 at the line and the heroics from Gueye ensued to give Stony Brook the victory.
