NEWARK, Del. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, falling to Delaware 75-61 in front of 1,771 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Junior
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) led the way with yet another 20-point outing, his third in the last four games, and classmate
Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.) hauled in a career-high 13 rebounds but Stony Brook was not able to overcome a 19-point halftime deficit.
FORD'S REACTION
"We ran into a terrific team who played at a really high level in the 1st half. During the 1st half we struggled on offense to finish Over their size and shot it poorly from 3 which is what created the big hole we were in at halftime. We responded and battled hard in the 2nd half and were able to cut the lead to 8 but just couldn't get it any closer to get them under any real late game pressure.
On behalf of the entire program I would like to wish all University employees, our fans, the surrounding community and our families a Happy Thanksgiving Holiday."
FLOW OF THE GAME
- The teams split the first 10 points of the game, as junior Makale Foreman (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a three to tie the game at five with 16:30 to play in the first.
- From there, the hosts went on an 18-4, including scoring 14 unanswered, to take a 26-9 lead over Stony Brook in the half.
- The advantage grew as large as 21 but a dunk from Otchere heading into the break cut the lead to 39-20.
- The Seawolves scored 11 of the first 18 points of the second half, with an Olaniyi and-1 cutting the deficit to 46-33 with 15:49 to play in the game.
- After Delaware ballooned the lead back to 16, Stony Brook cut the lead down to eight on three separate occasions, the latter two coming after Olaniyi layups, and the score stood at 59-51 with 8:04 to go.
- The Blue Hens were able to keep Stony Brook at bay, however, outscoring them 16-10 down the stretch.
STATS AND NOTES
- Otchere has already matched last season's total with two double-figure rebounding games. He leads all current Seawolves with four of that variety in his career.
- His previous career high was 12 boards in the season opener against Yale.
- Along with his fourth 20-point game of the season, Olaniyi has now scored 10 or more in 42 career games and 14 consecutive, dating back to last season.
- The Seawolves outrebounded Delaware 47-39, with 17 of the 47 coming on the offensive glass.
- Olaniyi and redshirt-junior Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) each recorded season highs in the rebounding department, hauling in nine and eight respectively.
