STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Despite erasing a 10-point deficit against the reigning Ivy League champions, the Stony Brook men's basketball program fell in an overtime thriller at Island Federal Arena, 74-69, on Tuesday night. Sophomore
Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) hit a three with 19 seconds left to give Stony Brook the lead but a Yale free throw tied the game to send it to the extra five minutes.
FORD'S REACTION
"We were a little out of rhythm. We didn't shoot the ball great. Give Yale a lot of credit but I don't think we looked like the team we looked like throughout the preseason. That is something we can build on going forward. We played really well for 20 minutes but the first half is what had us beat."
FLOW OF THE GAME
- After the Seawolves jumped out of the gates with the first four points, Yale responded with a 10-0 run over a span of 2:16 to take a six-point advantage.
- Stony Brook cut the lead to one on a layup by redshirt junior Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) but again the Bulldogs pulled away with six points in a row at the 7:51 mark.
- Yale had a pair of 10-point advantages late in the half and took a seven-point lead into the break at 30-23.
- An 11-0 run overlapping the break gave Stony Brook a 31-30 lead three minutes into the second period after Garcia finished inside.
- The teams traded baskets at the midway point of the period with Latimer's layup giving Stony Brook a 46-45 lead at the 9:43 mark.
- The visitor's largest lead in the second half was 61-55 with 1:49 to go. Seven points in a row for the Seawolves gave them the lead, capped by the Latimer triple.
- The Bulldogs scored seven of the first eight points in the extra session, taking a lead they would not relinquish.
