STONY BROOK, N.Y.– The 2019 Stony Brook baseball campaign commences Friday night in Miami, Fla. when the Seawolves take on Florida International in a three-game set that commences at 7 p.m. at the FIU Baseball Stadium.

Stony Brook is coming off a 32-25 season a year ago and a runner-up finish at the 2018 America East Baseball Championships, falling to preseason favorite Hartford in the first of a possible two games in the final round of the tournament. The Seawolves return seven of their nine starters from last year's lineup, as well as all three regular starting pitchers, to gear up for a run at the 2019 title.

THE OPPONENT
Florida International is coming off a season in which they finished just below the .500 mark at 26-28 and a two-game exit in the double elimination Conference USA baseball tournament in Biloxi, Miss. The Panthers are led at the plate by a trio of junior hitters who all hit .340 or better last season with Juan Teixeira leading them all at a .345 clip last season. Austin Shenton, who hit a point less, chipped in nine home runs and 29 RBI during the year.

Logan Allen is back for his sophomore campaign after making a team-high 12 starts last season, finishing with a 3.89 ERA in 74 innings of work. He led the team with 85 strikeouts on the year.

THE SERIES
This will be the eighth, ninth and 10th all-time meetings between the Panthers and Seawolves. Florida International has won all seven of the prior matchups, including a 12-2 win most recently in 2014.

PICKING UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF
The Stony Brook Seawolves were picked second in the 2019 America East preseason coaches poll, receiving two of the seven available first-place votes. Stony Brook sits behind Hartford, who received the other five, in the poll, starting the season as the two ended last year with the teams meeting in the Championship Round of the 2018 America East Baseball Championships.

GRANDE'S HISTORIC SEASON
Junior INF Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) enters the 2019 season with his 2018 act as a hard one to follow. He finished the year hitting at a .377 clip with six home runs and 28 RBI, while added 18 doubles and 28 walks. He also stole 32 bases and culminated the season with a .468 on-base percentage. Both his batting average and on-base percentage slated him inside the Top 35 nationally.

READY AND RE-LOADED
Based on last year's America East Championship lineup, the Seawolves lose just two position starters from last season and the closer the team boasted in Maine in 2018. Stony Brook also returns its top two starters from a season ago, with Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) both slated to make their first starts of 2019 this weekend, while transfer Jared Milch (Pacifica, Calif.) will also make his first start in a Seawolves uniform. Stony Brook also brought in transfer Adam Erickson (Roseville, Calif.)to be a big arm in the bullpen for 29th-year head coach Matt Senk.

ON DECK
The southern swing continues for the Seawolves next weekend in Hammond, La., playing a three-game set with Southeastern Louisiana starting Friday night at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
