Stony Brook Uses Long Ball to Outlast FIU on Opening Night

MIAMI – After seeing a 7-1 advantage cut to one at 7-6, the Stony Brook baseball team remained composed, scoring three more runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull away from Florida International 13-7 at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami.

The Seawolves utilized the long ball to aid the offense, with senior Dylan Resk (Ardsley, N.Y.), senior Michael Russell (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) and junior Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) all hitting home runs to aid in the offensive cause. On the mound, redshirt junior Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) went five strong, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five for his first win of the season. Junior Adam Erickson (Roseville, Calif.) recorded his first save as a Seawolves pitcher, closing the door with three solid innings on the back end of the night.

SENK'S REACTION
"We did so many positive things tonight from Marino's start to Erickson's save and all the hits and runs in between. But the thing I was most pleased by was our resiliency when the game was at its toughest. It's the intangibles that allow you to earn a hard-fought win as we did tonight"

SCORING SUMMARY
  • The scoring started in the second, with Russell and Tuccillo clearing the left-field wall to give Stony Brook an early advantage. Russell sent his high in the air that went over the fence, then two batters later, Tuccillo hit his on a line.
  • Stony Brook added three in the fifth, with senior Sean Buckhout's (West Nyack, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher being thrown in the dirt at third, allowing senior Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) to come around and score.
  • Junior Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) looped a single into right, scoring Tuccillo to make it 4-0 and then Buckhout scored on a wild pitch to increase the advantage to 5-0.
  • FIU got one back on an RBI double from Lorenzo Hampton to make it 5-1.
  • Wilson's home run made it 7-1 in the top of the sixth, but then two singles, a double and a sacrifice fly by the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead down to 7-5.
  • Another sacrifice fly made it 7-6 after Erickson came on with nobody out and the bases juiced, but the Panthers would only get the lone run in the situation.
  • Stony Brook added three in the third, with Alamo, Tuccillo and Buckhout supplying the at-bats to extend the lead back to a comfortable four.
  • After FIU cut it back to three, the Seawolves added three more, with Resk hitting a two-run shot and Tuccillo finishing his night with an RBI single to right.
