STONY BROOK, N.Y.–  For the middle trip of three straight road series, the Stony Brook baseball team heads to Louisiana to take on the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game set, beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. in Hammond, La.
Â
The Seawolves took two of three from Florida International to open the season, with victories on Friday and Saturday night before falling in Sunday's finale. JuniorÂ
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.)Â went 8-for-14 on the weekend with two home runs and five RBI, while redshirt-juniorÂ
Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.)Â went five strong innings on opening night as each earned America East weekly honors.
Â
THE OPPONENT
Southeastern Louisiana is looking for its first win of the 2019 campaign after they got swept at home last weekend by Louisiana Tech and fell in a midweek contest at No. 1 LSU on Tuesday afternoon. The team is averaging eight runs per contest in those four losses but has surrendered 11.5 per night in four games.
Â
The Lions boast a pair of .400 hitters after the first four nights, with Nathan Pilutti (.438) and Preston Faulkner (.400) both leading the batters. They have also combined for 10 RBI on the season. Trey Shaffer enters as the team's best starter after a six-inning effort this past weekend in which he gave up four earned runs while striking out five.
Â
THE SERIES
The only other series the Seawolves have played with the Lions came in 2008, when Stony Brook took home a pair of 10
th-inning victories to take two of three out of Hammond, La. The Lions won the second game of the Saturday doubleheader by just one run at 2-1.
Â
MAKE ME LIKE MIKE
JuniorÂ
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.)Â earned America East Player of the Week honors after recording an eight-hit weekend in Miami, Fla. against Florida International. This included a game-winning home run with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth to put the Seawolves up 7-6 on Saturday. He also added a home run in Friday's contest and a three-hit output on Sunday.
Â
PICKING UP WHERE WE LEFT OFF
The Stony Brook Seawolves were picked second in the 2019 America East preseason coaches poll, receiving two of the seven available first-place votes. Stony Brook sits behind Hartford, who received the other five, in the poll, starting the season as the two ended last year with the teams meeting in the Championship Round of the 2018 America East Baseball Championships.
Â
GRANDE'S HISTORIC SEASON
Junior INFÂ
Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.)Â enters the 2019 season with his 2018 act as a hard one to follow. He finished the year hitting at a .377 clip with six home runs and 28 RBI, while added 18 doubles and 28 walks. He also stole 32 bases and culminated the season with a .468 on-base percentage. Both his batting average and on-base percentage slated him inside the Top 35 nationally.
Â
READY AND RE-LOADED
Based on last year's America East Championship lineup, the Seawolves lose just two position starters from last season and the closer the team boasted in Maine in 2018. Stony Brook also returns its top two starters from a season ago, withÂ
Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.)Â andÂ
Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.)Â both slated to make their first starts of 2019 this weekend, while transferÂ
Jared Milch (Pacifica, Calif.)Â will also make his first starts in a Seawolves uniform. Stony Brook also brought in transferÂ
Adam Erickson (Roseville, Calif.)Â to be a big arm in the bullpen for 29
th-year head coachÂ
Matt Senk.
Â
ON DECK
The Seawolves finish their southern road trips next weekend, when Stony Brook takes on No. 13 Arkansas for a three-game set in Fayetteville, Ark.
Â
All three games will be broadcast on SEC Network Plus.Â
