STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Fresh off the team's best offensive output against a Division I team this season, the Stony Brook men's basketball team is headed to Binghamton to try and continue the offensive groove it found Saturday night against Hartford.
Â
SophomoreÂ
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.)Â scored 20 of his career-high 28 points in the first half, helping Stony Brook build a big lead that they would hold onto late in the second half. Redshirt-sophomoreÂ
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.)and redshirt-juniorÂ
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)Â each recorded double doubles to aid in the effort.
Â
THE OPPONENT
Binghamton hits the second round of America East games at 2-6 and losers of six of its last seven. Most recently, the team fell to Albany on Saturday night, 64-50, in the Capital District.
Â
Sam Sessoms led three double-figure scorers for the Bearcats, totaling 13. J.C. Show and Calistus Anyichie added 10 each.
Â
Sessoms leads the team in scoring, contributing 17.8 per night and 18.5 per game against conference opponents. Caleb Stewart has added 14.8 per outing against America East opposition.
Â
The freshman has made the fifth-most field goals among his class nationally, hitting 157 shots on the year. As a team, the Bearcats are ninth in the country in total blocks with 117 on the campaign and are 12th in fewest fouls.
Â
THE SERIES
Stony Brook has won 41 of the 68 overall meetings in a series that dates back to the 1962-63 when Binghamton was known as Harpur College. The Seawolves won the earlier matchup, taking down the SUNY opposition 59-46 at Island Federal Arena on January 9.Â
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)Â had a double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds andÂ
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.)Â chipped in 12.
TWENTY-PIECEÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
SophomoreÂ
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.)Â scored 20 of his career-high 28 in the first half of Stony Brook's win over Hartford on Saturday night. This is the second time a Seawolves player has hit the 20-point mark in a half this season, asÂ
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)Â scored 20 in the second half of the team's win at Manhattan. The 28 points are the most by a Seawolves player this season and the most since Yeboah poured in 30 at Columbia in December 2017.
Â
SEEING DOUBLEÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Redshirt-sophomoreÂ
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.)Â and redshirt-juniorÂ
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)Â each recorded double doubles on the night, the second time this year that the combination have teamed up for at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in a game. For Garcia, it is the first of his career against a Division I opponent, finishing the night with 13 points and 11 boards. Yeboah is averaging a double double in his last four appearances, scoring 15.3 points and hauling in 10.3 rebounds per game. He had 16 and 14, respectively, on Saturday night.
Â
HEADED TO THE RECORD BOOKS
Redshirt-juniorÂ
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)Â is on pace to rewrite the junior records at Stony Brook, currently heading towards the most prolific scoring season by a junior in Seawolves history, eclipsing Jameel Warney's 16.4 points per game in his third season. His current clip, 17.2 per night, would be just the second time a Seawolves player has scored 17 a game since the 2003 season. He has also recorded seven double doubles on the season, which is tied for fifth-most by a Stony Brook player in the Division I era.
Â
COLD OUTSIDE = COLD INSIDE
As the polar vortex has hit most of the country, Stony Brook's defense has also been keeping its opponents cold from the floor in conference play. Seawolves opposition is shooting 40.2 percent from two-point range and 27.1 from 3-point land. Both marks lead the America East.
Â
BENCH BUCKETSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Redshirt-sophomoreÂ
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.)Â led the Seawolves in scoring on Saturday night, totaling 14 points, with 10 coming in the second half. Coming off the bench in all but two games, he is averaging just under 10 points a game, at a 9.7 per night clip. He is very efficient from the floor as a bench spark as well, shooting 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range this season for the Seawolves.
Â
IMPROVING YEAR BY YEAR
The Seawolves are already 9 games better than last season, which is two less than the best turnaround in the country. Stony Brook has won four games more (18) than the 2017-18 season in which they won 13. The best turnaround this season currently belongs to Longwood, who is 11 games better than they were last year. Bryant, Pitt and South Florida currently stand 10 games ahead of their respective 2017-18 paces.
