STONY BROOK, N.Y. – To open conference play, the Stony Brook baseball team went 2-for-2 in the first doubleheader of the America East season, defeating UMBC 4-3 and 9-3 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves got big performances from a pair of lefties at the plate, as junior
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the opener and junior
Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) drove in four in game two, going 3-for-4 at the plate.

GAME 1 SUMMARY
- The Seawolves scored the game's first runs in both contests, with Wilson starting the scoring in the opener with a two-run single up the middle to make it 2-0.
- UMBC got a home run to right center in the third to cut halfway into the lead, then completed the comeback with a single up the middle in the fifth.
- Wilson drove in his third run in the bottom half, looping a single into left-center to score Hamilton and make it 3-2 Seawolves.
- After a single down the line in the sixth, Wilson put an exclamation point on his return to the lineup with a long ball over the fence in right-center to give Stony Brook the lead for good at 4-3.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
- The teams combined for six runs in the first, with the Retrievers plating a pair in the top half with a two-run home run to center.
- Three doubles gave the Seawolves the advantage in the first, with Wilson, freshman Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J.) and sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) all adding two-base hits. It was 4-2 home team after the first.
- The Schenectady native then cleared the bases in the fourth, blowing the game open at 7-2 in the fourth.
- After UMBC got a run back in the sixth, junior Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) singled and Hamilton doubled to bring the game to its final scoreline at 9-3.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook finished both games a combined 9-for-14 leading off innings and 9-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
- Hamilton has now driven in 11 of his 13 runs in the last six games.
- Wilson returned to the lineup with a five-RBI day, going 4-for-7 in the two games.
- Junior Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) went the distance for the second time in his career, pitching all seven innings of the nightcap.
- 6.1 innings for redshirt-junior Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) is a season-high for him, going into the seventh inning for the first time in 2019. He struck out four and walked nobody to earned the game one victory.
- The top three of the Seawolves order (Grande, Hamilton, Wilson) combined to go 12-for-23 with nine runs scored and 10 RBI on the afternoon.
- Stony Brook has now won four of its last five opening series in America East play.
- The Seawolves had seven doubles in the second game, marking a new season-high for the club.
