STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The senior G duo of
Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) and
Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) had a Senior Day to remember as the Stony Brook women's basketball team took care of business and topped Vermont, 58-48, at the Island Federal Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The pair combined for 29 points as Matthews led the way with 16 and Johnson added in 13.

"It's always an emotional day honoring your seniors. I feel like we have two players that are very mature and they do a lot for us and I think that their teammates really wanted to play for them today and we were able to do that. I'm really proud and thankful to be their coach."
HIGHLIGHTS
- Stony Brook's defensive effort was in full force in both the second and third quarters, holding Vermont to single digits.
- After grabbing a 32-21 lead at halftime, the Seawolves exploded for 21 points in the third quarter in comparison to the Catamount's eight to charge out to a 24-point advantage.
- Vermont fought back in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 of its own points while limiting the Seawolves to just five, but couldn't get past its 10-point deficit.
- The Catamounts opened up the final period with back-to-back threes, but sophomore G/F Hailey Zeise (Pittsburgh, Pa.) splashed in her own three to put a stop to the visitors' run.
- Sophomore F India Pagan (New London, Conn.) joined Matthews and Johnson in double-figure scoring with 13, including a perfect 5-5 performance from the free throw line.
- Matthews and Johnson recorded five of the team's seven three-point field goals.
NOTES
- Redshirt sophomore F Kina Smith (Bronx, N.Y.) had a big outing on the boards, leading the team with a career-high nine rebounds.
- The squad as a whole had a great outing in corralling rebounds, hauling in 52 to Vermont's 32.
- This marks the fourth-straight win for the Seawolves over the Catamounts.
- The last time Stony Brook recorded 50-plus rebounds was on Nov. 22, 2017 against Farmingdale State.
- The Seawolves scored 18 of its points in the paint, 11 from second-chance opportunities and 10 from the bench.
