STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team battled hard on Tuesday afternoon, cutting a six-run deficit down to one, but the Seawolves were not able to complete the comeback, falling to Rutgers 6-5 in Piscataway, N.J.
The loss ended the team's eight-game winning streak, which was the second-longest in the country at the beginning of the day.
SENK'S REACTION
"I'm proud of how we competed to get back in the game and get close enough in the eighth and ninth innings to tie or go ahead but the early six run hole we put ourselves in proved to be too much to overcome and have the eight game winning streak unfortunately come to an end."
SCORING SUMMARY
- Rutgers started the scoring in the bottom half of the first, sending a RBI ground-rule double over the left-center field wall on one hop, making it 1-0 Scarlet Knights.
- The home team scored five in the third, securing a sacrifice fly and RBI double before a three-run home run gave them a 6-0 lead after the third.
- Stony Brook's comeback began in the seventh, as senior Brandon Janofsky (Jackson, N.J.) got the team on the board with a sacrifice fly.
- Juniors Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) followed that up with back to back run-scoring singles to make it 6-3. A sacrifice fly from senior Sean Buckhout (West Nyack, N.Y.) made it 6-4 after seven.
- Senior Michael Russell grounded into an error by the first baseman to the cut the lead to 6-5 with two outs but Buckhout, who moved to third on the play, was stranded 90 feet from home.
