STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team has now won five consecutive America East contests after a sweep of Maine on Saturday, defeating the Black Bears 8-3 and 5-3 in the two games at Joe Nathan Field to open up a three-game set.
Both starters, redshirt-junior
Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior
Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) pitched seven strong innings to put the Seawolves in position to win after early offense put the hosts ahead in both contests.
SENK'S REACTION
"I couldn't be more pleased with what we did today. Offensively we were very strong and our starting pitching was extremely strong as well. Overall, it was a terrific day. Our defense also made some big catches in the outfield when we needed to. It was a pretty complete and thorough day to get the sweep of the doubleheader."
GAME 1 SUMMARY
- After junior Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) reached and stole two bases, his classmate Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) drove him in with a sacrifice fly in the first to start the scoring.
- Stony Brook added two more in the second thanks to homers from sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) and senior Brandon Janofsky (Jackson, N.J.) to make it 3-0.
- Wilson drove in another in the third, sending a triple into the left-center field gap. He then scored on a Sean Buckhout (West Nyack, N.Y.) fielder's choice to make it 5-0 after three.
- Tuccillo scored Wilson in the fifth with a RBI groundout to third, increasing the lead to 6-0.
- After Maine hit a pair of home runs in the sixth, Buckhout lofted a two-run single to center to equal out the long balls and the score was 8-2 after seven.
- The Black Bears got an extra run in the bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
- Grande quickly started the scoring in the nightcap, homering in the first at-bat for the Seawolves. Tuccillo scored senior Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) to double the lead in the first.
- Janofsky's sacrifice fly to center in the second drove in Stony Brook's third run of the day.
- Maine scored one in the third and one in the fourth via a RBI double and home run to cut Stony Brook's lead down to 3-2.
- Grande's second home run gave Stony Brook a 4-2 lead and senior Dylan Resk (Ardsley, N.Y.) roped a single that increased the lead to 5-2.
