STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After a sweep to start the conference slate, the Stony Brook baseball team moves into its second America East series this weekend, welcoming Maine for a three-game set at Joe Nathan Field.
Â
The Seawolves saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon as the comeback against Rutgers fell just short with the visitors losing 6-5 in Piscataway, N.J. Stony Brook opened America East play two weekends ago, defeating UMBC in all three games on Long Island.
Â
THE OPPONENT
Maine comes in after a split with Binghamton last weekend in a rain-shortened series as the two teams each took a game of the doubleheader in Vestal, N.Y.
Â
The Black Bears scored in six of the nine frames in a 8-0 victory over Binghamton Sunday afternoon before dropping the finale 4-1. Nick Silva threw eight strong innings, allowing six hits and striking out two in the contest.
Â
Among players who have started all 20 contests, Hernen Sardinas and Joe Bramanti are the team's leading hitters, batting at a .253 and .250 clip on the season. Silva, the No. 1 pitcher in this weekend's rotation, has a 1-3 record with a 5.40 ERA on the year.
Â
THE SERIES
Stony Brook has won 52 of the 83 overall meetings in a series that dates back to 2002. The Seawolves won four of the five meetings, including both America East Championship contests last season in Stony Brook's run to the Championship Round.
Â
PLATE DISCIPLINE
The Seawolves started the season with double-figure strikeouts at the plate in seven of their first nine games as the team got off to a 3-6 start. Since then, they have only eclipsed that mark twice and have won eight of their previous 10. This includes striking out just 13 times total in three games against Sacred Heart and going down by way of the K 11 times in the team's first America East series against UMBC.
Â
CLARKE IN CONTROL
Senior
Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) has quickly lowered his ERA thanks to back-to-back quality starts from the mound. He has allowed two earned in his last 14.2 innings, dropping his season average to 2.40, good for second in the conference amongst pitchers with three or more starts. His .218 average against is third-lowest amongst pitchers within the same category. He featured a 2.19 ERA his freshman season, going 6-2 on the year.
Â
WILSON HAS THE JUICE
Junior
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) is one of the nation's leading power hitters, currently ranking seventh in the country in slugging percentage (.821) and fourth in batting average (.463). He also sits seventh in hits per game and 12th in RBI per contest. Over his 10-game hitting streak, Wilson is hitting .528 with 14 RBI, four doubles, two triples and two homers with hits in seven of his last 11 at-bats.
Â
TOP THREE GETTING IT DONE
The top three in Stony Brook's lineup, Wilson joined by juniors
Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) and
Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.), are helping lead the Seawolves at the plate. All three of them are batting over .320 on the season, with Hamilton sitting at .333 and Grande at .324. All of them have a .514 slugging and .419 on-base percentage or better. The trio has also combined for 10 of Stony Brook's 18 home runs and 52 of the team's 111 runs driven in.

Stony Brook hits the road for four in a row this week, heading to New Rochelle, N.Y. for a midweek contest against Iona on Wednesday afternoon before opening a three-game set with America East preseason favorite Hartford next weekend in West Hartford, Conn.
