STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Fresh off a pair of non-conference wins this week, the Stony Brook baseball team looks to ride that high into its America East series with Binghamton, which commences Saturday in Vestal, N.Y. Stony Brook defeated Iona and Central Connecticut during the week, taking down the Gaels at home 4-2 before traveling to New Britain, Conn. and beating the Blue Devils 9-3.
THE OPPONENT
Binghamton enters the weekend over .500 for the first time this season, currently sitting on a 13-12 resume after a win at Cornell on Tuesday afternoon. The team scored the first three runs of the contest in an 8-4 win over the Big Red in Ithaca, N.Y. Daniel Franchi led the Bearcats at the top of the order, going 4-for-5 while Justin Drpich drove in three of the runs.
Coming into the series, Alex Baratta is hitting .365 on the season with 16 RBI, good for second on the team. Ben Anderson is the team's leading starter, holding a 2.25 ERA in eight starts. He has struck out 57 batters in 44 innings. Anderson is inside the top 60 in both strikeouts (57) and strikeouts per nine innings (11.66) in the country. The team is 63
rd in the country in fielding percentage and 73
rd in walks per nine (3.75).
THE SERIES
Stony Brook has a 53-39 edge in the overall series that dates back to when Binghamton was known as Harpur College in 1973. The Seawolves have won six of the last eight matchups between the two schools including taking two of three at the Bearcats Sports Complex last April.
A GRAND(E) STREAK
Junior
Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) has reached base in 22 consecutive games, a streak that started on March 1 against Arkansas. It matches his longest streak of the season from last year and has turned into more production in the form of hitting at the plate. In his last nine outings, he has hit .528 (19-for-36), with five doubles, a triple, two home runs and nine RBI with just four strikeouts.
DYNAMIC DUO
Juniors
Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) and
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) have provided a tenacious one-two punch in the top three of Stony Brook's lineup. Other than being the team's top two hitters, both lead the America East in that category, hitting .391 and .408, respectively. The pair also make up the top two in the conference in total bases and slugging percentage.
PLATE DISCIPLINE
The Seawolves started the season with double-figure strikeouts at the plate in seven of their first nine games as the team got off to a 3-6 start. Since then, they have only eclipsed that mark twice and have won 15 of their previous 18. The team has only struck out 16 times in the last four games.
CLARKE IN CONTROL
Senior
Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) has quickly lowered his ERA thanks to four consecutive quality starts from the mound. He has allowed five earned in his last 29 innings, dropping his season ERA to 2.15, good for the league lead among starting pitchers. His .221 batting average against is second in the conference in the same category to Binghamton's Ben Anderson.
ON DECK
The Seawolves will go straight into the next conference series, hosting Albany for three games at Joe Nathan Field this upcoming Easter weekend. The teams will battle twice on Friday afternoon starting at Noon before the series culminates Saturday at the same time.
