STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- After a two-hour weather delay just before the fourth quarter began, the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team knocked off conference-foe UAlbany, 12-10 to become the outright America East Regular Season Champions on Friday night at LaValle Stadium.
It's the Seawolves' second consecutive season winning at least a share of the regular season title, and their first time winning it outright since 2012.
Quoting head coach Jim Nagle
"It was a great win to get the regular season championship against a great program like UAlbany," Nagle said. "They've gotten the best of us in this rivalry game for quite some time, so I'm glad we could set the table back to even. It was a great accomplishment for our guys and they'll enjoy it tonight but they've got to turn the page and continue to get better."
Highlights
- After UAlbany scored the first goal of the night, the Seawolves rattled off the game's next five goals. Freshman Layton Harrell (Newtown, Conn.), sophomore Mike McCannell (Orangeville, Ontario), and juniors Tom Haun (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Chris Pickel Jr. (Bayport, N.Y.) scored for Stony Brook.
- The Great Danes answered the run with a goal of their own before Haun scored the last goal of the quarter, a behind-the-back effort. Stony Brook led 6-2 after one.
- Senior Owen Daly (East Rockaway, N.Y.) scored to start the second quarter before the Great Danes answered with a man-up goal.
- The two sides exchanged goals over the last eight minutes of the first half, and the Seawolves held a 10-5 lead at halftime.
- The Great Danes owned the third period, scoring all four goals of the quarter to trim their deficit to 10-9 after three.
- As the third quarter ended, lightning struck near the area and both teams went to their locker rooms. The delay lasted two hours and eight minutes.
- The Seawolves scored first after the delay when junior Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) found Pickel Jr. who buried a goal.
- UAlbany answered a minute later to cut its deficit back to one.
- With just over seven minutes remaining, Haun scored his fourth goal of the game to extend Stony Brook's lead to 12-10.
- The visitors got three shots on goal off in the final minutes of the game, but all of them were stopped by junior goalkeeper Michael Bollinger (Holbrook, N.Y.) to seal the win.
