Game Recap: Baseball |

Fast Start Helps Seawolves to Midweek Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team started fast against the hosts Iona on Wednesday afternoon, scoring the game's first 10 runs, and they were able to fend off a late charge from the Gaels to earn its fourth straight win.

The 3-4-5 hitters in the Stony Brook lineup were the power source of the offense, with junior Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.), senior Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) and sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) combining to drive in eight runs while going 7-for-12 at the plate.

SENK'S REACTION
"Offensively, we got off to a great start and built a substantial lead and that was the biggest reason we were able to earn today's win."

SCORING SUMMARY
  • Junior Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored on senior Brandon Janofsky's (Jackson, N.J.) attempted steal of second to start the scoring.
  • Tuccillo then laced a triple to left to double the lead in the first.
  • Janofsky started the team's five-run second, hitting a fielder's choice out to second that scored freshman Brad Hipsley (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
  • Wilson, Alamo and Tuccillo then all recorded back-to-back-to-back hits, with Wilson and Tuccillo hitting RBI singles and Alamo sending a two-run double into the left-center field gap.
  • Wilson then added three more runs to the Stony Brook scoreline, hitting a two-run double down the right-field line in the third and a sacrifice fly to center in the fifth.
  • After Iona got on the board in the fifth, Janofsky hit another RBI fielder's choice in the seventh to make it 11-1.
  • Iona scored three consecutive runs thanks to a pair of bases-loaded walks and a hit by pitch before the team cleared the bases in the eighth with a triple, but 11-7 is as close as the Gaels would get.
STATS/NOTES
  • Wilson has now driven in four runs in four games this season. This was the first game since March 16 against UMBC.
  • Janofsky joined the 3-4-5 part of the order with a pair of RBI of his own. It was his second multi-RBI outing of the season.
  • Tuccillo now has five multi-RBI games, while Alamo has three to his name.
  • Junior Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Nick DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J.) each pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Gaels off the board through four.
  • Alamo now sits on a 10-game hitting streak and Grande reached three times on hits to extend his streak to 17 games of reaching safely. Both marks lead the team.
  • Stony Brook broke into double figures in runs for the fourth time this season. The team's 15 hits are tied for the most they've collected in 2019.
  • The Seawolves are now hitting .290 as a team, which is 22 points better than the second-place team.
UP NEXT
