STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team has a pair of midweek contests ahead of its next America East weekend set, playing host to Iona on Tuesday afternoon before heading to New Britain, Conn. for a Wednesday matinee against Central Connecticut.
ABOUT THE GAELS
Iona enters its final meeting with the Seawolves after being swept over the weekend in a conference series with Manhattan. The Gaels bats went quiet in Riverdale, N.Y., scoring six runs combined in the three road matchups.
Overall, Iona has lost six in a row and is 6-24 on the year. The Gaels have lost 17 of their 21 games away from City Park and are facing their first of two America East opponents on back-to-back Tuesdays. They will head to Albany on April 16 for an afternoon contest.
Brian Picone leads the Gaels at the plate, hitting .323 at the plate along with a team-high four stolen bases. On the mound, Stephen Hansen has been the team's leading starter, currently sitting on a 4.26 ERA in eight starts this season.
THE SERIES WITH THE GAELS
The Seawolves have won 18 of the 22 matchups with their New York City foe, winning the most recent matchup 11-7 in New Rochelle, N.Y. last week. Stony Brook raced out to a lead, scoring 10 runs in the first five innings en route to the win. Junior
Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) and sophomore
John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) each had three-hit days, while junior
Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) chipped in four RBI.
ABOUT THE BLUE DEVILS
Central Connecticut is winners of four of its last six contests, winning a weekend set with Wagner last weekend before splitting a pair of non-conference games this past weekend.
In Vestal, N.Y., the Blue Devils defeated Niagara with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, winning via a walk-off sacrifice fly to center. Central then lost the following day, dropping a 3-2 decision to the host Bearcats.
Currently sitting at 12-10 on the season and 4-3 in the Northeast Conference, the offense is led by Buddy Dewaine, who's hitting at a .321 clip on the season with one homer and 10 RBI. Brandon Fox is the team's leading starter, currently sitting on a 3.05 ERA in 41.1 innings of work.
THE SERIES WITH THE BLUE DEVILS
Stony Brook has won eight of the 13 all-time meetings between the schools. The Seawolves blanked their upcoming NEC foes at Joe Nathan Field a season ago by a 5-0 final. Four pitches combined to five-hit the visitors as the Seawolves scored two in the second and eighth and added one in the fifth for the win.
ON DECK
Stony Brook will head to the site of the America East Baseball Championship for a three-game set this weekend, taking on Binghamton twice Saturday before the series finale Sunday. The Seawolves will look to maintain their one-game advantage in the standings, currently sitting at 7-2 in league play.
