STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Strong starting pitching led the way as redshirt junior
Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) started game one with six scoreless and senior
Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) followed it up with two runs over six innings in the second game as Stony Brook swept a doubleheader with Wagner today, improving to 27-19 on the season.
SENK'S REACTION
"The keys to today's sweep were the starting pitching jobs by Marino in game one and Clarke in game two. They pitched about as well as you'd want your starters to pitch. On top of that, our defense was really good. It was about as efficient as you would want your defense to be behind that starting pitching.
GAME 1 SUMMARY
- The only two runs in the first seven innings came off the bat of junior Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) who hit a two-run single to right in the third.
- Wagner cut halfway into the lead with a single to right in the eighth.
- Senior Sean Buckhout (West Nyack, N.Y.) drove a two-out, two-run double to left to give the Seawolves insurance they would need heading to the ninth.
- Wagner brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but would only bring one run home.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
- After Wagner started the scoring in the fourth, sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) knotted the game with a two-out single in the fifth to score Buckhout.
- Stony Brook scored four in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. After Hamilton and senior Brandon Alamo (Artesia, Calif.) singled to bring in two runs, Buckhout doubled down the line again to make it 5-1.
- The Seahawks answered with a run in the bottom half of the sixth. They then tied it in the seventh with a single and two-run triple.
- Hamilton then put the Seawolves ahead for good in the ninth with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right, scoring freshman Brad Hipsley (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
