STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook baseball team needs one win to lock up the America East Regular Season title this weekend as the Seawolves welcome UMass Lowell for a three-game set. The teams will play two on Friday before honoring the seniors and closing the 2019 regular season on Saturday.
The Seawolves took both games of a weather-shortened series last weekend at Wagner, sweeping the Seahawks 4-2 and 6-5.
THE OPPONENT
UMass Lowell enters the final regular season weekend with a spot in next week's America East Championship at 17-33 on the season and 10-11 in league play.
They are coming off a three-game sweep of UMBC that eliminated the Retrievers from contention and locked up the playoff spot for the River Hawks.
Oscar Marchena leads the squad at the plate, batting .345 with an .840 OPS in 45 starts this season. In the power department, Cam Blimo, Ciaran Devenny and Steven Passatempo each have five homers on the season.
On the hill, Nick Rand has made 14 starts on the season and currently holds a 4.26 ERA to his name. He has struck out 71 batters in 80.1 innings of work.
AGAINST THE RIVER HAWKS
The Seawolves have won 16 of the 29 overall meetings with the River Hawks in a series that dates back to 1996. Stony Brook took four of the seven games last season, including a 6-5 America East Tournament victory that propelled the Seawolves into the Championship Round.
IT'S MAGIC, YOU KNOW
As the Seawolves enter the final weekend of the regular season, the team's magic number sits at one to clinch its fifth America East regular season title in the last nine seasons. The team can achieve this mark with one win against UMass Lowell this weekend or losses by both Binghamton and UAlbany.
BUCK IS CLUTCH
Senior
Sean Buckhout has been a consistent run producer for the Seawolves as of late, driving in six runs in his last three appearances. During this span, he has also hit three doubles. On Saturday, he drove a two-out, two-strike double down the line to score a pair and give Stony Brook insurance they would need in the bottom half of the ninth.
GONE STREAKING
Senior
Brandon Alamo reached base safely in 32 consecutive games this season, a stretch that started on February 24 against Southeastern Louisiana and lasted until the May 4 trip up to Maine. During this span, he hit a .361 clip with a team-high 17 doubles. He also added 3 home runs and 25 RBI.
DOUBLE THE EXCITEMENT
Senior
Brandon Alamo leads a double-happy offense for the Seawolves, as he leads the league and is 19th nationally with 19 two-base hits on the season.
Nick Grande (17) and
Dylan Resk (15) sit fourth and fifth, respectively on the league leaderboard. As a squad,
Matt Senk's club is 14th in doubles per game with 2.27 and 27th nationally with 104 total doubles. Both numbers lead the America East
ON DECK
Stony Brook heads to Vestal, N.Y. for the second time this season, ready to compete in the 2019 America East Championship that starts on May 22. The team needs one win to clinch a bye or the other two conference series on the weekend to be splits to ensure the team does not play on the first day of competition.
