VESTAL, N.Y. – The awards have been given out. The regular season has been celebrated. Now, it's time to play ball in the 2019 America East Baseball Championship. The Stony Brook baseball team, fresh off its fifth America East regular season title, will play fourth-seeded UMass Lowell in its first game on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Binghamton's Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Seawolves finished the 2019 regular season 15-9 in league play, a half game ahead of UAlbany, to claim the regular season crown and top seed in the tournament. This gave them a bye during Wednesday's action.
GRANDE AMONG NATION'S ELITE
Junior Nick Grande was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Semifinal list, given to the nation's best shortstop. Grande was also named the America East Player of the Year and joins the company of four ACC shortstops, as well as two from the Southeastern Conference in an award that has been won in the past by major leaguers Dansby Swanson, Trea Turner and Alex Bregman.
VIEWS FROM THE TOP
The Seawolves clinched their fifth America East regular season title in program history on Friday afternoon. All five titles have come since the 2011 season and in Stony Brook's last two trips to the NCAA Tournament, they have won both the regular season and postseason titles.
IT'S MAGIC, YOU KNOW
The Seawolves entered the final weekend with one separating them from an America East regular season title and they got it in dramatic fashion: a walk-off sacrifice fly from John Tuccillo that scored Brandon Alamo to help the Seawolves erase a two-run, sixth-inning deficit to win the game in the seventh.
BUCK IS CLUTCH
Senior Sean Buckhout has been a consistent threat at the plate for the Seawolves, reaching in 16 consecutive contests dating back to April 19. He also came up big at the plate in the team's doubleheader at Wagner, driving in four runs total on the day including a two-run double in the ninth of game one that provided much-needed insurance.
GONE STREAKING
Senior Brandon Alamo reached base safely in 32 consecutive games this season, a stretch that started on February 24 against Southeastern Louisiana and lasted until the May 4 trip up to Maine. During this span, he hit a .361 clip with a team-high 17 doubles. He also added 3 home runs and 25 RBI.
DOUBLE THE EXCITEMENT
Senior Brandon Alamo leads a double-happy offense for the Seawolves, as he leads the league and is 21st nationally with 20 two-base hits on the season. Nick Grande (17) and Dylan Resk (15) sit third and fourth, respectively on the league leaderboard. As a squad, Matt Senk's club is 13th in doubles per game with 2.22 and 33rd nationally with 109 total doubles. Both numbers lead the America East.
