Florenz, Francese Strike as Seawolves Open League Play With Road Win

ORONO, Maine – Powered by two early, first-half goals, the Stony Brook women's soccer team started league play with a shutout victory of Maine on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) started the scoring by finishing a low cross in the 9th minute. Her classmate, Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.) headed home an attempted Maine clearance off a free kick 2:25 later to double the lead in the first half and give the Seawolves all they would need to take all three points.

BISCHOF'S REACTION
"This was a tough game for us, coming off the Fordham game on Thursday and having to go on the road against a well-coach and well-organized Maine team. They came into the game 4-2 and I am very pleased with our performance to open league play."

SCORING SUMMARY
  • 9th minute – Stony Brook 1, Maine 0 – Francese finished off a great move started by freshman Paula Petri (Viersen, Germany), who played a through ball to junior Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden). She got to the end line and hit a low cross to Francese, who finished on an open frame.
  • 11th minute – Stony Brook 2, Maine 0 – Florenz was able to take advantage of a failed Maine clearance, as a defender got a head to a free kick from junior Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) but it went right to the East Islip native, who put it far corner.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Francese now has four goals in her 2019 campaign, which is good for the team lead. All of them have come in the last seven games.
