Tyquell Fields (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scrambled 50 yards for a touchdown on a fourth down play with 11 seconds remaining to give the Stony Brook football team the lead and the Seawolves defense stopped Rhode Island in the final seconds to secure a 31-27 victory in the CAA Football opener on Saturday night at Meade Stadium.
The Rams (0-4, 0-3 CAA Football) scored a pair of touchdowns in less than a 30 second span in the fourth quarter to erase Stony Brook's 10-point lead, but the Seawolves (4-1, 1-0 CAA Football) and Fields marched 74 yards in 49 seconds to retake the lead.
SCORING
- Stony Brook cracked the scoring column first when WR Jean Constant pulled down an 11-yard pass from QB Tyquell Fields in the corner of the end zone on the Seawolves' opening possession. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was 11 plays for 76 yards and took 4:27 off the clock.
- RB Ty Son Lawton opened the second half scoring with a one-yard rushing touchdown with 12:05 left in the third quarter on Stony Brook's opening possession of the half. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was seven plays for 65 yards and took 2:55 off the clock. QB Tyquell Fields was 2-2 for 42 yards on the drive.
- Rhode Island got on the board late in the third quarter when WR Aaron Parker hauled in a 12-yard pass from QB Vito Priore in the end zone. The PAT by K CJ Carrick was good. The drive was seven plays for 89 yards and took 2:39 off the clock.
- RB Isaiah White punched through the line for a one-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter to give the Seawolves a 21-7 lead. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was nine plays for 79 yards and took 4:03 off the clock. The drive was highlighted by a 44-yard catch by WR Andrew Trent from QB Tyquell Fields.
- The Rams answered on the ensuing kickoff when returner Ahmere Dorsey sprinted 99 yards to the end zone. The PAT by K CJ Carrick was good.
- K Nick Courtney nailed a 29-yard field goal with 9:20 remaining in the fourth quarter to expand the Stony Brook lead to 10 points. The drive was 12 plays for 73 yards and took 4:54 off the clock.
- Rhode Island trimmed the lead back to one possession when QB Vito Priore connected with WR Isaiah Coulter on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining in the game. The PAT by K CJ Carrick was good. The drive was 11 plays for 92 yards and took 4:47 off the clock.
- After a successful on-sides kick, the Rams took three plays to take the lead when WR Aaron Parker scored on a 29-yard pass from QB Vito Priore with 1:05 left in the fourth quarter. The PAT was missed.
- Stony Brook answered and retook the lead on a 50-yard rush by QB Tyquell Fields with 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The PAT by K Nick Courtney was good. The drive was eight plays for 75 yards and took 0:49 off the clock.
