Senk to be Inducted Into New York State Baseball Hall of Fame

BALLSTON LAKE, N.Y. – Entering his 30th season at the helm of Stony Brook's baseball program, head coach Matt Senk has been through it all. Taking the program from Division III to Division I, five major league alums, 834 wins and an unforgettable June run to the College World Series in the summer of 2012.

Now, the Seawolves' No. 10 is being honored amongst baseball's best as a member of the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2019.

"To be inducted into the 2019 New York State Baseball Hall of Fame Class is an incredible honor," Senk said. "It is humbling to think that I will be included amongst some of the greatest players, coaches, managers, writers and broadcasters the game of baseball has ever known. I am truly grateful and thankful to everyone that made this possible."

The 2012 NCBWA National Coach of the Year joined the Seawolves program in 1990, leading them to a 16-9 record in his first season at the helm. 29 years later, he has led his team into 1398 games, including those 834 wins which ranks 24th amongst active Division I coaches. He has taken his team into the NCAA Tournament seven times.

52 of those wins, the most in the country during that year, came during the 2012 season, when the team Shocked the World. They won the Coral Gables Regional and Baton Rouge Super Regional en route to the program's first College World Series appearance.

They were the first Northeast team to go to Omaha since the tournament went away from geographic regionals in 1987 and are just the second four seed to date to make it to college baseball's grand stage.

"Matt has given so much to the game of baseball and to each of the young men who have had the privilege of playing for him at Stony Brook," Stony Brook Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron said. "His induction into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame is extremely well deserved, and I am beyond excited for him."

The induction, to take place on November 3 in Troy, N.Y., will feature many New York baseball legends, including former Yankees Ron Guidry and the late Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson, as well as well-known Mets broadcasters Howie Rose and Ron Darling.

Senk joins six-time MLB All Star Joe Nathan, who was inducted into the NYSBHOF last November. Senk coached Nathan at Stony Brook and the formidable closer went on to play for five different major league teams and was recently inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame.
