Hofstra Downs Stony Brook on OT Strike

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team fell to local foe Hofstra on Sunday afternoon, as the Pride scored in the 104th minute to win 2-1 in overtime at LaValle Stadium.

Junior Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) played very well in goal, making six saves for the Seawolves.

BISCHOF'S REACTION
"Hofstra did what they always do. They are very well organized. It was a tough opponent. They are one of the best teams in our region. We kept it together for most of the game but unfortunately in overtime they put one in on us. I think we did a good job this afternoon but we ran into a team that was better than us."

SCORING SUMMARY
  • 8th minute – Hofstra 1, Stony Brook 0 – Hofstra used good combination play to cross a ball to the far post and the finish was low past Manner for the first goal of the afternoon.
  • 15th minute – Stony Brook 1, Hofstra 1 – Junior Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tied the game on a quick break. Classmate Erin O'Connor (Setauket, N.Y.) fed her down the right flank and Francese caught the Hofstra keeper out of position for the equalizer.
  • 104th minute – Hofstra 2, Stony Brook 1 – A long cross to the far post again was finished off by Hofstra in the first chance of extra time for either squad to give the visitors the victory.
STATS AND NOTES

  • Francese is now up to three goals on the season, with two coming in the last two games. She has a team high in that category.
  • O'Connor also has two assists in as many contests on the year, her first pair of points on the season.
  • The six saves for Manner is the second-highest for her this season, only bested by her eight in the season opener against Northeastern.
  • Junior Chase Rome (Mulino, Ore.) led the Seawolves with a pair of shots on the afternoon.
