Box Score LOWELL, Mass. — Makale Foreman got a favorable bounce when the Stony Brook men's basketball team needed it most. And the Seawolves returned to the win column on Wednesday night with an 84-76 victory against UMass Lowell at the Tsongas Center.
Stony Brook (14-8, 5-2 America East) trailed by as many as a dozen points in the first half, but rallied to take a three-point lead at halftime.
Then, down 48-45 after intermission, the Seawolves used a 13-0 run and held UMass Lowell scoreless for 6 minutes, 3 seconds to take a double-digit advantage.
However, the River Hawks (8-14, 2-5) rallied to pull ahead, 63-61.
Yet Foreman and
Miles Latimer immediately answered with consecutive three-pointers. Latimer shortly thereafter also drained another trey to open a 70-65 lead with 3:10 to go and the Seawolves held on.
Foreman's go-ahead trey had bounced up off the rim, then fell through the cylinder. He produced a team-high 19 points.
"We didn't shoot the ball great," Stony Brook coach
Geno Ford said. "And then we got the lucky —kind of fortunate — bounce. … And then Latimer banged one and that really flipped the game. But they certainly were in a position to win."
Stony Brook had four players score in double-figures.
Andrew Garcia contributed 18 points. Latimer had 17. And
Elijah Olaniyi contributed 13 points as well as five steals.
"In the first half, when we were out of sorts and we weren't making any threes, Drew was able to just keep us afloat. Those stretches of the game are enormously important. We got down double-figures, but we could easily have been down 20. We were able to keep it at eight or 10. And somehow, at the end of the half, we made just enough of a run and got a small lead."
Stony Brook rebounded from last Wednesday's homecourt loss to Binghamton.
"They've got the best offensive team in the league," Ford said about UMass Lowell. "That's what all the analytics will tell you. [UMass Lowell coach] Pat [Duquette], it doesn't seem to matter what group he has, they can really, really score. They really diced us early. We got lucky. They had a tough shooting night. They had some good looks against us that didn't go."
The Seawolves return to action against UMBC on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Island Federal Arena.
