STONY BROOK, N.Y. — CJ Trenkle, Connor Grippe, Chris Pickel Jr., Tom Haun and Tom Dugan will be back with the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team this upcoming spring after having their original final year cut short.

And all five have been selected by their teammates to serve as captains for the Seawolves for the 2021 season.

Head coach Anthony Gilardi informed the quintet on Wednesday.

"We could not be more excited to announce our five captains for the 2021 season," Gilardi said. "This group embodies our culture of championship effort, toughness and family — both on and off the field."

Trenkle, Grippe and Pickel also served as captains last season, when Gilardi guided the Seawolves to a 5-2 record in his first year at the helm before the season was halted due to COVID-19.

Trenkle, a defenseman and the youngest of three siblings to wear No. 20 for the Seawolves, is pursuing a master's degree in economics. He earned bachelor's degrees in economics and applied mathematics in May 2019 after only three years in college. He started all seven games last spring, scooping up six ground balls and causing five turnovers, and was named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Grippe, a midfielder and business management major, had a pair of goals in a win at Rutgers on Feb. 29. An America East Honor Roll qualifier, he scored six times during the abbreviated season.

Pickel, a fellow midfielder, earned an Undergraduate Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement in Leadership and was named a USILA Scholar All-American earlier this year. He also earned a spot on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll. Pickel tallied seven goals and three assists last spring, including a pair in a season-opening overtime win against St. John's.

Haun, an attackman and America East Honor Roll selection, finished the shortened 2020 season in a three-way tie for 10th place on Stony Brook's career goals list with 95. He entered the top 10 in program history with a four-goal outburst at Bryant on March 7. He also contributed hat tricks against St. John's, Fairfield  and Sacred Heart while tallying a team-high 21 points (15 goals, six assists) in seven starts.

Dugan, a midfielder from Commack and another America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, dished out an assist in a victory over Hofstra on Feb. 25. He also collected five ground balls in six games.

The Seawolves are scheduled to open their 2021 conference schedule on March 20 at UMass Lowell.
