POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Stony Brook men's lacrosse was defeated in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, falling to MAAC champion Marist 10-6 in Poughkeepsie.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was the Red Foxes who drew first blood on Wednesday night, scoring on a man-up opportunity and taking the early 1-0 lead. The opening goal was followed by another from Marist, as it took a 2-0 lead with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams' offenses were kept at bay for the remainder of the quarter as defense controlled the final minutes of the opening quarter.
With 9:25 on the clock in the second quarter, the Seawolf offense broke through as
Collin Williamson fired in a man-up goal, cutting the Stony Brook deficit to one. The Seawolf goal was met with a pair of goals less than a minute apart by the Red Foxes, putting them ahead 4-1. Stony Brook tallied the final goal of the first half, as it now trailed 4-2 at the halftime break.
The Seawolves wasted little time starting the scoring in the second half, courtesy of a goal from Williamson off a nice dodge just 56 seconds into the third quarter. Marist regained control a few minutes later, tallying a pair of goals six seconds apart, now leading 6-3 with 11:22 remaining in the third quarter. Stony Brook battled back with back-to-back scores from Williamson, cutting its deficit to one and giving the junior four goals on the night. The goals from Williamson were the final ones of the third quarter as the Red Foxes held a 6-5 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
Marist opened the fourth quarter in strong fashion, scoring a pair of goals and extending its lead to 8-5 with 12:01 left to play. With 6:14 remaining, Stony Brook got on the board in the fourth quarter after Williamson found twine yet again. The Red Foxes then tallied the final two goals of the game to secure the 10-6 opening round win over the Seawolves.
STATS AND NOTES
- Williamson led all goal scorers with five goals scored on Wednesday night.
- Junior Jake Lewis rounded out the Stony Brook goal scorers, scoring one in the road loss.
- Tommy Wilk made nine stops in net, posting a .474 save percentage in the opening round matchup.
