Women's Basketball's Winning Streak Halted at 4 on Road

LOWELL, Mass. — The Stony Brook women's basketball team took to the road for the first time in America East play on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Seawolves, their four-game winning streak was halted.

Stony Brook fell to host UMass Lowell, 63-60, marking the first time the River Hawks have topped the Seawolves in the D-I era.

With Stony Brook trailing 57-51, Leighah-Amori Wool sank a three-pointer with 2 minutes, 25 seconds remaining to make it a one-possession game. And a three-pointer from Anastasia Warren with 21 seconds to go pulled Stony Brook within 59-57. However, the Seawolves ultimately could not overcome what had been a 10-point third-quarter deficit.

Warren led the Seawolves with 18 points. She had a three-point attempt with 10.3 seconds remaining with an opportunity to pull even that didn't fall. And UMass Lowell was awarded the possession after a lengthy review by the officials to determine who had last touched the basketball.

UMass Lowell's Jaliena Sanchez made the second of a pair of free throws with 7.3 seconds remaining to restore a two-possession advantage.

Warren then drained another three-pointer to pull Stony Brook within a point, 61-60, in the final moments. Sanchez made it a three-point advantage with two free throws with 1.3 seconds left to cap the scoring.

Stony Brook (4-3, 2-1 AE) had rattled off nine straight points to open the game and held the River Hawks scoreless for the opening 5:33.

The Seawolves opened a double-digit lead for the first time, 15-5, on a layup from Gigi Gonzalez late in the first quarter and eventually opened a 16-point lead before halftime.

However, UMass Lowell blitzed Stony Brook during the third quarter, outscoring the Seawolves by 16 points in the period, and at one point grabbed a 54-44 lead.

The River Hawks (3-3, 2-1 AE) host the completion of the two-game series on Monday at 1 p.m.
