STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook baseball team's pitching assignments are becoming more clear as Opening Day looms.
The Seawolves have named
Jared Milch their starter for Friday's 7 p.m. EST first pitch at Texas State.
The senior left-hander entered the rotation for the final month of the 2019 regular season and pitched Stony Brook into the America East title game by striking out four in 5 1/3 innings in a 7-5 semifinal victory over Binghamton.
A pair of 2019 relievers will make their season debuts as Saturday's doubleheader starters, with
Sam Turcotte going in Game 1 and
Nick DeGennaro taking the ball in the nightcap.
"Having Jared, Sam and Nick start for us this weekend gives the team confidence we can be successful due to their experience and ability," head coach
Matt Senk said.
Senk is now in his 30th season at the helm of the program.
Milch started eight games for Stony Brook last season, making starts during the opening two weekends before adjusting to a bullpen role for the bulk of March and April. He then started each of the last three league weekends and made two postseason starts.
Turcotte was a lock-down pitcher out of the bullpen last season. He recorded seven saves, including one in the America East Championship. He started just one game, but made a team-high 24 appearances.
DeGennaro made his first career start against SEC foe Arkansas last season. He overcame a rocky beginning to retire 10 in a row before exiting after 3 1/3 innings. He finished the season with 36 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings.
Saturday's start times are set for 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. EST. Sunday's series finale begins at 1 p.m EST.
