CLEMSON, S.C. — Another day, another senior serving up a stellar pitching performance on the road.
This time, it was
Sam Turcotte, who threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to keep Stony Brook tied with ACC foe Clemson on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Seawolves, the Tigers produced a 1-0 walk-off win in the 10th inning on Elijah Henderson's RBI single against reliever
Brian Morrisey.
"Clemson's starting pitching has been terrific these first two games, as has ours," head coach
Matt Senk said.
The game had remained scoreless in the seventh courtesy freshman right fielder
Ellis Schwartz's arm.
Schwartz gunned down tagging Clemson runner Bryar Hawkins at the plate for a double play. The runner initially had been ruled safe, but the call was overturned after video replay.
The Seawolves (1-4) had threatened a half-inning earlier, placing
Brad Hipsley and
Brett Paulsen in scoring position with one out before a pair of strikeouts by Clemson pitchers bailed them out. Stony Brook also placed a runner in scoring position in the top of the 10th.
"Offensively, we will look to be more consistent in our approach as well as improve on our overall execution, especially situational and timely hitting to generate some much-needed run support for these quality starts we have been getting," Senk said.
Morrisey erased a one-out walk in the ninth thanks to a double play, sending the game to extra innings.
Turcotte's performance came on the heels of senior starter
Jared Milch and freshman reliever
Josh O'Neill combining to limit the Tigers to two runs in a 2-0 loss in Friday's series opener.
The teams complete the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
